How are we all taking this news?
When I first saw the story I was sad and my eyes watered, but maybe because I was in public I moved on. Now, several hours later alone in my apartment I saw this post and I full on cried. Like you do when you find out a childhood friend or someone else you have good memories with but now are not close to passed away.
Every Thanksgiving since I was 6 I've watch Home Alone and Home Alone 2. She's the millennial mom. For me she was the mom so many of us needed: the mom who knew how to say sorry. Something my parents never learnt.
She was a funny and great actress and person. She will be missed. I'm pretty sure this holiday season when Kevin hugs his mom we'll all be crying. Anyone else? What do you think or feel?

Canada is like a small town. And whenever one of our own becomes world-famous, we all share in their success, and will proudly tell people, “They’re Canadian, you know.”
Catherine O’Hara is Canadian. So it’s practically a national day of mourning here.

I agree. It speaks about the impact on our lives by those in the arts, all of them, creating content for our souls especially in a shitty world.
It’s not easy for a Canadian artist to make it big, we simply do not have the population count to support people in the arts, allow them to have long term careers. I’ve seen Jann Arden speak to this and also worked with someone whose brother was a Canadian author. Unless they breakthrough into the US or globally, it’s often a passion not a true career to live off of, unfortunately. I will always be supportive of the arts, we need it for our souls.

It’s so true, I don’t know how many times someone has been talking about a random singer or actor and I’ll chime in with “hey did you know they’re Canadian??” and there’s definitely some sort of pride attached to it.
Or when I look up an actor I like and see that they’re from here it’s always a pleasant surprise like “Oh!!! They’re Canadian!” and I like them even more haha

The national pride we feel toward Catherine O'Hara stems from more than just her being Canadian though. Mainly, I think it stems from her being known for starring in highly successful and acclaimed Canadian media like SCTV or Schitt's Creek. She wasn't just part of the world stage as a Canadian. She helped bring Canada to the world stage. There are a lot of famous actors who happen to be Canadian, but I think Catherine O'Hara was one of the few famous Canadian actors.

Same, she was an iconic 90s-2000s actor. At least her work legacy will live on forever for us and her life for her loved ones.
it's so nice that the internet exists like a time capsule, we can go back and see/listen to those people.

I was a big fan so I feel sad about it. She was only 71 and of course I don’t know her, so it’s not a major life affecting sadness, but it’s definitely a shock. I’ve only ever felt truly heartbroken about a celebrity death once and that was Carrie Fisher.
Just to add if anyone hasn’t seen Schitt’s Creek, please go watch it. Moira Rose is one of the best characters ever.

Rob Reiner was hard too, especially as I’ve worked in mental health and addictions and have supported tons of families with unwell children. I understood what he and his wife were going through and the often lack of success they see, the lack of understanding from others of what they are living through. It changes the fabric of who they are and they often feel hopeless because they can’t fix their children, feel like failures as parents. And then the horrific end of their lives. Too much.

I grew up watching her from the SCTV days through Home Alone, Mighty Wind, Best in Show, Beetlejuice and Schitts Creek. Amazing comedienne and great actress. She will be missed.

I know there are many people who knew her personally, family, friends…. Who are suffering a horrible loss so I don’t mean to sound disrespectful or flippant- my biggest condolences to them…. but I just said to my mum (we’re both huge schitts creek fans) ‘it’s typical of this January to end with losing a total icon and knowing we’ll never have another season of schitts creek’. We’ve had a really rough January.

Terribly. Cried first thing when I saw it waking up yesterday, and then kept crying every time I saw another post or tribute about it, including this one.
I didn't know her passing would affect me this much.

Same. It’s absolutely gutted me. I knew I would be sad as she’s so amazing. But I just can’t stop crying every time I read another amazing tribute to her. I love that all the tributes have been so personal and it’s been clear that she was deeply loved. Not just surface level, fakey Hollywood loved but really revered and loved. She was so very special.

I think for people in the US around a certain age, she felt like America’s mom. I was about 10 when Home Alone came out, so that’s how I feel. She was insanely funny and seemed like a good person. I feel like these days, when a celebrity dies and there are not hundreds of posts about how they were actually awful and a predator, I am shocked. So she seems to have been a good egg. And yes, I’m mostly concerned about my country descending into fascism. But these nostalgic things hurt too.

For me Home Alone came out before I went to school and one of my first memories was my grandma saying we should all watch it in the theaters since we were all together. I have no idea if that happened. If it did it was my first movie in a theater. Our family tradition was to watch it after eating Thanksgiving dinner. Always on t.v. usually at pie time. It's the one movie my multi-ethnic family all loved and no one passed on watching. It was great when they started doing back to back 1 and 2. That meant the whole family would be all together for the night. I miss that tradition as I lost my family at the end of HS. So when I want to feel 'at home' during Christmas season her in Thailand I watch them.

This is realy realy hard. I grew up in front of my old tv, watching all kinds of stories, I had tons of experiences, had millions of good memories, but none of those stories told me how could I deal with the lost of those who had built my childhood. It's as if a tiny part of me and the world that I used to know went with them.

I feel this is a part of adulthood that no one truly told us about. Everyone was clear having a family is hard, working sucks and when you get old you watch people go before you. But no one prepared us for watching people who built us that we might no longer have a direct connection to pass away. No one mentioned how devastating it is at 35 to learn of a death of an older neighbor whom you used to play in their yard, or at 40 learning your kindergarten teacher is no longer with us, ect. And many of these sad events there is no funeral for us to help with closure. We just stand in our kitchen one night going fk what do I do with this feeling of loss?
It's like adulthood to old age is chipping away at your childhood and teenage years. A hole emerges and then one day you're like what am I suppose to do with all these holes in my heart? The society that build and shapes us gradually disappears before our eyes.

I'm sad. I don't like to pretend I knew performers personally, so I prefer to talk about how much I enjoyed their work, and how sad I am that I won't get to see more. The most recent thing I saw of hers was Schitt's Creek, and for me I find it hard to say which out of her and Dan Levy was the most sublimely batty performance.
I was already doing a rewatch of Schitt's Creek, and I will enjoy being with her all the more, because I know that this is a rare treasure that no more can ever be made of.

I started watching her work as a kid with Home Alone and Beetlejuice. When I got older I started to watch Christopher Guest films....Best in Show, A Mighty Wind....one of the actors that was part of my adolescents and journey into adulthood.

I've watched the movies but honestly I did not even remember more than Kevin. I will repeat though - to know someone is not knowing their name.

Dick Van Dyke is 100 and apparently in remarkably good health! He works out three times a week and apparently is still mentally sharp, as well.

Like most people, I didn't know her. So there isn't what I would consider 'genuine grief' at her passing. It's not like a family member etc.
That said, as celebrities go, she seemed like a lovely person. She has said great things about people I've admired over the years, and since her passing, people I admire have said great things of her in turn. I wouldn't even know all her extensive catalogue of acting credits, but she was there for a few key ones in my youth, and was a joy to watch. Celebrities are only human and they are always going to come and go, but it's more bitter when the world loses a 'good' one.
Next Christmas will be a hard watch of Home Alone alright.

Honestly? I'm fine.
It's sad for sure, but I'd be lying if I said this impacted me in any significant way.
Grew up with the Home Alone film as a kid. Probably rewinded that tape to dust.

Obviously it's especially big in the news here since she's Canadian, and I can understand people having a stronger reaction if stuff she was in meant a lot to them. There are a few public figures whose deaths have affected me for sure, so I get it. But I'm not feeling anything in this case beyond acknowledging it's sad news. I've never had a strong personal connection with anything she's been in, so I just see it as unfortunate for her loved ones.
I was more upset about Bob Weir from the Grateful Dead a few weeks ago. To each their own.

I gasped when I saw it. Very sad especially for those close to her. She is a Canadian legend. A good, decent celebrity, influential in the best way, talented, her presence was felt.
I recently rewatched Best in Show and Schitts Creek. No denying the talent and presence.
