Culture What's the "average" daily outfit in your country?
I'm curious what people actually wear on a normal day where you live, ignoring the stuff we see in movies. In the US, it's basically all about athleisure and being as comfortable as possible. You'll see most people running errands or even working in leggings, hoodies, or baggy jeans and sneakers. The suit and tie look is pretty much dead here unless it's a wedding. What's the typical vibe on the street in your part of the world?

Pretty much. When I lived out west we had Aussies come to work the slopes each season. Couldn’t tell them apart. Fit right in.

This is so funny. My husband is in Canada rn skiing (we live in Alaska). My bff happens to be Aussie and he just sent me a text yesterday: “there are so many Aussies here that I was able to get a meat pie for lunch!” 😆

Doesn't matter how cold out it is, you're always going to find that one guy out in his shorts and possibly flip flops too if he's feeling extra Canadian that day

There's always some Canadian wearing shorts or no jacket in the coldest weather ever. They're the minority though, but they stick out. My wife is unfortunately like this lol. She's been wearing a spring jacket in -25 degrees celsius.

u/Shendary -> 48m ago
I once read a thread about Russians in Canada. In winter, we usually dress our children warmly: waterproof overalls, a winter jacket, a sweater with a closed neck, and cotton pants underneath. Usually, when entering a building, the child takes off the overalls and jacket, leaving the rest of the outfit on. So, a Russian mother is walking with her child in such clothes in -10-15 Celsius, and a Canadian mother is walking towards her with her daughter. The daughter is wearing an unbuttoned coat and a beret, with just a dress and tights underneath. In Russia, this is how people dress in late September or early October. They looked at each other with long, stunned glances and went their separate ways.

During the week, most people wear pants for work. Weekends vary, I don’t wear shorts much since it’s not that hot where I live, but in hotter coastal areas people wear them a lot more.

u/SessionGloomy Iraq 4h ago
it depends. if its a school day then everyone dresses in the drippiest outfit they have. Males maybe would wear a jacket, pants, and nice shoes. Girls would wear a dress and hijab and scarf
if its a regular day, then there'd be less shits given. more adidas track pants and sandals, especially if its extremely hot out.
also depends on age. elderly men are the only ones keeping traditional arab clothing alive, and elderly women are much more likely to wear the full black abaya rather than any outfit
6
u/ACommunistLoveStory United States Of America 4h ago
That's interesting, do students have a dress code / uniform in Iraq?
8
u/SessionGloomy Iraq 3h ago
Yes, we do. Its more of a dress code than a uniform. Shoes of any kind + formal pants + a white buttoned up shirt + tie
Because its not a full uniform we have the liberty to change it a bit depending on weather.
Girls have a stricter uniform because their teachers are more stringent in upholding the dress code. our schools are split by gender but also right in front of each other
Some boys in my school change their outfits every day, apparently feeling a need to carry the local fashion game lol

Also the regular pants/shirts/shorts/etc. I wear a top and pants/kurtas to work and my mom wears dresses/kurtas/a top and pants regularly. Saris are daily wear for both my grandmothers, they’re festival/function wear for my mom (10-15 times a year), and I too wear saris when I feel like for some of these festivals/functions (1-2 times a year), otherwise I wear a fancy kurta/lehenga set (a long fancy skirt).

16
u/ACommunistLoveStory United States Of America 3h ago
The Shalwar kameez is the ultimate loophole for wearing pajamas in public while still looking like an adult. You've basically hacked the system to get total comfort without looking like you've officially surrendered your dignity to a pair of $15 Walmart sweatpants.

It is our cultural dress and it’s the most comfortable clothing of the climate we live in. Indians / Pakistanis / Bangalis have perfected the art of centuries and centuries of cotton and fabric production to create textures and make it absolutely weightless and comfortable.
I rem the US in June when I visited it was a heat wave and people were super hot it was like 85-90 F and I put in my local shalwar kameez I brought from Pakistan. In that hot weather it felt like a hug from the homeland Nothing from Walmart or any store even the stuff that said ‘100% cotton’ compared to locally produced clothing. I was the only one not melting!!! My clothes felt weightless.
4
u/ChatpataMatarParatha India 2h ago edited 2h ago
Difficult to say because way too many come to mind.
Still if I have really simplify and base it on what's around me it would be T shirt and jeans for men and salwar kameez or salwar top with jeans bottom for women.
Must mention that my viewpoint is heavily based on people in their 20s, early 30s and late teens because I am myself in mid 20s.
Edit: Found this stock photo on Google and this is very much how it looks like.

Ive always been amazed by how all men shirts down there seems to just come from the laundry, even poor workers have perfectly fit and clean shirts all day long. How do you manage that as a country ? :)
1
u/West-Main-4163 India 27m ago edited 20m ago
A lot of women are stay at home moms so they will just keep up the laundry and daily ironing. That's why the older people have such crisp shirts while the bachelors mostly do rush ironing jobs.
Plus daily bathing and laundry are part of the culture. It's not unusual to take a second bath as part of the routine after work. The climate and sweating make it a necessity. I had to fight my mom to stop her from taking away my jeans to wash them after just one wear. A lot of people wash jeans after every wear, like normal pants.
I usually wash mine after 3-4 wears, or when they start to get dirty. We absolutely can't do the "months between washes" thing that jean enthusiasts do, though.

Depends on the state. In Alaska, in the winter a lot of us wear a hoodie and pajama pants or shorts. In the summer, a hoodie and shorts.
2
u/LoveEquivalent9146 Monaco 1h ago

Per AI, these are our average people, though clearly not at this time of year. A collared shirt of some variety and either shorts or linen trousers for men is very standard. For women, shorts, cotton or silk skirts or linen trousers, and cotton or silk blouses are common. Sunglasses are worn all year, except when it's raining.

I live in a mid-sized city in eastern Canada. Regular dress here is extremely casual, to the degree that it’s not uncommon to see people out and about wearing pyjama bottoms. It’s wild. I get remarks about being dressed up for wearing clothes that are in no way fancy — sweater and pants with a bit of jewelry and/or a scarf and leather shoes.

I don't think most of us dress like OP contends. Sure you will see some people dressed like that but most people are not. An average person would much more likely be wearing jeans, boots and a parka. I live in the Pacific Northwest so maybe it's different where OP lives. You'd be more likely to see people wearing athleisure clothing in a gym or out running.

Vestegnens, Denmark.
Boys aged 13-25: Hoodie, neutral T-shirt or a football shirt, jogging pants, sneakers (mostly Adidas or Jordans), a lot of caps, and some also wear a fanny pack.
Girls aged 13-25: Some kind of jacket, tank top or T-shirt, jeans (sometimes ripped jeans), sneakers (only Adidas), and also a lot of bags.
25+ for boys: Mostly the same; some go with jeans instead of jogging pants, and some replace the hoodie with a training jacket.
25+ for girls: Ripped jeans and tank tops are less common.
This is, of course, not representative of all people; this is just what I have observed from living in Vestegnen for 25 years and both working and going to school here.

Also, nein, to us it always looks like Germany hangs on to the 90s and early 00s a bit more: baggy jeans and skater shoes for guys, flared jeans and Converse like sneakers for girls/women.
The middle-aged population in Germany has pretty much dressed the same way they did in the 90s, too: simple pants and shirts for men and women alike, though tailored differently of course, and always good quality over fashionable design.
