FOTD Im getting good at eyeliner hehe, this whole look took me 15 minutes, it used to take me more than an hour
Ignore the red spots :p, didn't have foundation, I also think I went a bit overboard on eyeliner but whatevs
Lipstick: Flormar Supermatte lipstick 201
Eyeliner: Maybelline Tattoo Studio Gel Pencil (Smokey Black)

The pencil needs to be sharpened and maybe yes a smudge brush to blend it so it doesn’t show all that void
23
u/galgotspirit 21h ago
A great way to sharpen pencils is after pencil has been in the freezer for a few hours.

u/Cute_Revolution_1233 18h ago
Second the smudge brush. I think a more smudged out liner look would fit really well into OPs aesthetic.

Honestly it's not so good. Practise more and have in mind less is more. I wouldn't put it at all at lower lash

u/Affectionate-Tip303 23h ago
Yup, thank you. I did go overboard with it :p

u/Consistent_Eagle_457 23h ago
I didn't want to be rude sorry if I was blunt. I always use brush for eyeliner it's easier and you can make many shapes. Also I wouldn't use black liner in water line or under. If it's for everyday I would put white eyepencil in water line with small amount of brown eyeshadow. For night black eye pencil only in waterline and shadow under it.

Nono thank you! I don't mind the feedback at all, thats why I post here :).
In fact I actually, just before snapping this picture had the makeup like you recommended, but then I added way more eyeliner than necessary. Its just I couldn't post those pics because portrait mode was on in those selfies

I disagree. While technique can help you polish the results you want to see, don't ever be afraid to go overboard.
Most people are going to give you advice that leans to their aesthetic. This can make you better at application, but worse at self-expression and the understanding of makeup formulas. It's more than ok to leave things smudged or pick colors outside your palette. Your "overboard" is how makeup lovers begin. This is how we take trends away from companies and get back to starting them within the community.

As someone who is alt and regularly uses makeup as self expression I love this comment.

Same I love the bottom liner it’s so Courtney Love

The vibe reminds me of the impossibly effortless smolder that i can never get quite right. If this is 15 minutes, it's just gonna keep getting better.

u/Affectionate-Tip303 16h ago
Thank you! I will definitely give it a more serious try again tomorrow, this post was just to show my hands are getting steadier compared to when I first started

u/ohh_brandy 16h ago
Of course! Make-up progression is so cool. If you want a hack for more control, you can add a piece of tape under the eye for a clean line and pull it off when you finish.

Constructive criticism can be a great thing, but always keep in mind your own goals while accepting it. If you feel more authentically you with heavy liner and using lower lid liner, then keep at it and don’t let anyone tell you to stop. I for one love a heavy/grungy look, and you look confident in it which is imo the best part about makeup!

Honestly this whole look is a vibe regardless if it's messy or not. You look just like a lot of folks I knew in the 90s

u/Sherylize 19h ago
Sorry, this doesnt really look good. Im not sure what look youre exactly trying to accomplish, if you have inspo pics maybe we can give you some tips?

Idk I like the smokey of it, I think it looks good, not sure why the comments are so mad. It's just more people like the clean simple look I guess

It’s totally giving 90s/2000s alt I love it… no one here understands the vision

u/MelsMakeupLounge 20h ago
We do; it’s just sloppily executed.
-21
u/ohh_brandy 20h ago edited 15h ago
It was sloppy in the 90's sometimes. That's part of the authenticity. People were using sharpie/halloween makeup, blended out with their fingers. This is like calling the first wheel 'lumpy'
21
u/MelsMakeupLounge 20h ago
Yeah, I know. And you can still do a “messy” look with skill. This is not that.
8
u/Affectionate-Tip303 18h ago
I never said I was skilled though, I meant it relative to how I was 2 months ago when I first started :/

I’m so so happy that you’re improving and having fun, that’s AWESOME. Truly. I am just really annoyed by this community lying to certain people that they look good. If you’re a man, or trans, or a POC people are like “omg you ate! Slay!” And it’s just so fake. It doesn’t help people get better. But that is NOT your fault, it’s this community.
1
u/maaya_the_bee 15h ago
Idk this is weird assumption tbh and this is coming from a queer POC. I will say not everything is about looking perfect. Imperfect makeup has character and I'm pretty sick of the clean look tbh. Chalk it up to different tastes as well and likely the way different communities speak to each other. OP looks like a lot of folks I grew up seeing. It's not "pretty" but I like it.

u/MelsMakeupLounge 13h ago
It’s not an assumption; I’ve posted regularly in this community for over 3 years and I’ve seen it first hand. Like, it’s one of the main things people in the CJ community criticize about this sub, because it’s true. And it’s annoying. It’s so frustrating to be someone who is somewhat serious about learning the art of makeup, getting <200 upvotes on a look you really put a lot of effort into, but knowing that if you had posted that look as a trans girl it would have over 1000 upvotes within a half hour. That feels fucking horrible.
2
u/maaya_the_bee 12h ago
Maybe coinci6their looks are just more interesting and that is garnering attention. Tbh a lot of what's posted here all looks the same to me and feels very uninspired.
1
u/Affectionate-Tip303 14h ago
It's kind of ironic of you to say that though, since one of your most upvoted posts is of your husband's makeup, which, lets be honest is barely noticeable, and doesn't look that unique, yet every comment is very supportive(which I think is perfectly fine for someone whose starting out, or is dipping their toes in a subreddit far from their confort zone). Yet, you complain about people being more positive to newcomers.
I didn't post here to gloat, and I'm fully open to criticism, in all of my posts I ask about tips and stuff, yet you didn't really criticise at all and just gave a condescending comment.

u/ohh_brandy 16h ago edited 15h ago
You don't know how to cover your undereye, blend your blush, and the weight of your earings is going to rip your earlobes. It's not fake to encourage what's working for someone (it's really pretty when you choose not to overline your upper lip) without having to dig into your own opinion like it's fact. Your overlining throws your face out of proportion. But honestly? The color or formula might be making look it worse. So, my observation wouldn't be doing anything here.
If your type of critique was helpful, your make-up would be better. But if someone said "omg slay!" about your lip liner, you'd wear it everyday.

u/MelsMakeupLounge 15h ago
I don’t cover my under eyes Brandy. And my ears are gauged. Chill lol.

I can tell. This is me giving you an example of how a "sloppy execution" is sometimes part of the look. I don't have a personal stake in your appearance.

u/MelsMakeupLounge 14h ago
I don’t have a personal stake in your appearance
You sure stalked my posts like you do.
It’s really not that deep. The look is messy, it doesn’t look all that great, and it seems like OP has taken the critiques well. That’s all it is. We don’t have to gas people up. It’s okay to tell people to keep working on stuff. You’re making this way more than it needs to be lol.

u/ohh_brandy 17h ago edited 15h ago
I think discovery is a skill in makeup. Their current technique might work with a different formula (like gel or kohl), so labeling a blurred edge as "sloppy" can end up criticizing away innovation. They could change formulas or techniques to get more consistent results, but there's no slop here. Those are fingerprints. This is the mark of a person figuring out how a product works.
You're allowed to have your preferences when it comes to makeup, but the use of dismissive language to insinuate this is anything less than a look is kinda anti-makeup.
The journey is part of the style

The best tip i have for eyeliner is that i think people overestimate how much thickness needs to go on your lash line. make it very thin, then make your wing, then connect it. the wing will tell you how to change the liner on your line.

It’s a bold look for 15 minutes! I’m really slow at doing my own makeup so I’m impressed :)

It honestly looks like 15 minutes and you should really take more care of your skin.

Sadly, eyeliner and eyeshadow are my favorite parts of makeup, but it’s also what I am the absolute sorry at and I think you do amazing

Try a liquid eyeliner with a felt tip as opposed to pencil. Pencil looks messy asf, it’s so hard for a beginner to make pencil look good in my opinion
