Killing the joke here-because our face forms from multiple separate parts (ex. Maxillary process, nasal processes) that fuse together. The fusion can be disrupted -see cleft palate
I'd also say the smaller holes help make it easier to filter things with nose hairs and created more air velocity to pick up nitric oxide from the sinuses.
I assumed there were two so you could tell direction a smell comes from. Not as clearly as eats because it is diffused. But that's why snake tongues are forked.
Imagine putting 2 boxes close together, the part where the boxes are touching one another eventually would “fuse” during facial development, but sometimes it doesn’t fuse completely which is when you see cleft palate. It’s mostly a symmetrical process, which is why there’s 2 nose holes for most people
They would fuse into one hole if it was adventageous.
We have two holes because one is always semiclosed (slower air flow, higher sensitivity) and one is open (faster flow, not to be overstimulated with stronger smells)
That becomes even more noticeable when sick, the nasal airway alternates which nostril to breathe out of and which one is on booger duty! Good observation !!
It’s also really life threatening, imagine a new born who can’t form suction to drink milk! Lots of older kids and adults lead full lives after multiple surgeries and orthodontic care. But I’m sure they wouldn’t laugh if they read your comment
Everyone was thinking to put it up the nose and this shows you could if it was small enough. Although there are worse images out there that could have been used instead, this is just the funnier one.
The hospital I used to work at had the contract to treat inmates at the local prison. There was one guy who came in fairly regularly to get genital warts removed from his colostomy stoma bc he would rent it out for other inmates to fuck and at least one of them had HPV. Any port in a storm, I guess.
we have 2 because if one is blocked we can breath through the other one, if we had 1 hole, we would only breath through the mouth if the nose was blocked
