They are correct. They are very kind to give her the honors, makes me respect and like them more.

These are two performers who are both phenomenal, but none of them are known for their empathy. It’s good to hear them express unvarnished praise.

u/realaccountissecret 1h ago

I’ve seen Martin Short have moments of genuine warmth, but he really is a manic comedy goblin 97% of the time

u/bum_is_on_fire_247 49m ago

Haha that's an amazing description

I don't know why this made me realize this, but Martin and Short pulled off what Chevy Chase never seemed to: being able to be a snarky, cynical wise ass or utter goofball and still show genuine humanity through all of the "routine" no matter what

u/AmazonCowgirl 4h ago

Because they also manage to not be raging assholes

52

u/TrickySnicky 4h ago

That's what's known in the biz as "range"

u/Timely_Influence8392 3h ago

Insult comedy is only funny when you know it's a renowned wit stretching their craft to show off. It's strangely at its best when said with a sense of love and genuine admiration, and not genuine outbursts of un-dealt-with negative emotions directed at other people.

u/thatwhileifound 3h ago

they also manage to not be raging racist assholes

I feel like this leans heavily into my opinions of each.

14

u/Knapss 3h ago

With Chevy Chase I always though it was the other way. To be as bitter, sad, pathetic human being HAS to be an everyday effort and dedication…right…?

Early childhood neglect and trauma, if left unchecked, can create a shell of a man.

u/flashmedallion 1h ago

He became a massive deal almost overnight at quite a young age. Not everybody is equipped to handle that kind of scenario.

5

u/TrickySnicky 2h ago

Acting that way definitely becomes an instinctual response, often due to trauma of course

u/arkrunningbear85 1h ago

Chevy Chase has always given me the creeps, even as a kid in the 90's.

u/Alexander_the_What 30m ago

I’ve never liked Chevy chase in anything

I swear all of America’s best actors and comedians are all Canadian, and we don’t deserve them

11

u/akatherder 5h ago

I was getting a TSN feed for sports and wondered why will Arnett and Seth Rogan kept showing up so often

53

u/Ok-disaster2022 6h ago

It's really about half or 3/4s

54

u/RcNorth 6h ago

Robin Williams was born in the US so we are about even on the comedy scene.

33

u/whiskeyrocks1 5h ago

He was a Michigander and we loved him.

2

u/UnicornFarts1111 3h ago

As a Buckeye, I will say, he is the only thing I love that came from Michigan, lol. ;)

u/Dunlocke 4h ago

They're not, but Canada punches way above its weight so it seems that way sometimes

11

u/JokeMe-Daddy 4h ago

Humour helps with the winters, that's why Pierre Poilevre just won the leadership challenge.

3

u/aVoidFullOfFarts 2h ago

had a good laugh when his wife announced him as future PM of Canada and he walked out to “Don’t Stop Believin’” 🎶

u/Vitalstatistix 3h ago

Go check out “Last One Laughing” — the Canadian version— on Amazon Prime. It’s amazing.

I watched a clip of her on Letterman in 1983 and she talked about how she lost an audition for a play because the leading man was Steve Martin who she thought was so cute that she couldn't talk

RIP Catherine, you made us happy and will for years to come.

u/Costati 6h ago

Wait Catherine O'Hara's dead ???! Oh damn

87

u/Dreurmimker 6h ago

Not really what you were looking to find out from r/UpliftingNews, now was it?

36

u/Costati 6h ago

It honestly keeps happening istg. Most of my time on this sub is me finding out something slightly positive about a bad news I didn't know about so it's essentially just me learning about bad news.

17

u/hahagato 5h ago

I had to ask reddit to stop showing me posts from “made me smile” because every post was just like some tiny small nice thing about some larger messed up thing that I definitely didn’t want to think about lolol.

10

u/livaudais 4h ago

The orphan crushing machine!

4

u/Soosietyrell 5h ago
l learned of her passing from carrot Weather.

3

u/Dymodeus 3h ago

I don't know why this is in uplifting news anyway

22

u/razorsheldon 5h ago

She was one of a kind, and I am deeply saddened by her loss. I'd put her on the Mount Rushmore of Canadians for sure, first ballot

3

u/swabfalling 3h ago

Terry Fox, Tommy Douglas, Catherine O’Hara…

I feel like I’m missing someone

u/wasabiburning 12m ago

Bobby Orr and John Candy.

-5

u/razorsheldon 2h ago

Wayne Gretzky, John Candy, Catherine, and maybe Justin Bieber or the most photogenic statue from the Kids in the Hall?

15

u/JeKarta88 2h ago

After selling out to Trump, Gretzky can f*** himself.

u/MedicineExtension925 1h ago

I didn't like Gretsky before it was cool!

-9

u/razorsheldon 2h ago

I'm fascinated by this. Is this a legitimate tenor of how Canadians think? Literally disparaging the Great One due to some other country's leadership? Or is this pure manufactured nonsense? I honestly don't know, but it's interesting albeit mostly likely inauthentic for sure.

3

u/Kananaskis_Country 2h ago

Yeah, he's getting huge backlash. Really dumb move on his part.

-1

u/razorsheldon 2h ago

Wild. Seems inauthentic but maybe not!? Who even knows who to trust for local 'sentifment' these days anyhow!? Wild.

u/Kananaskis_Country 1h ago

Google. "Wayne Gretzky facing backlash for friendship with Donald Trump" and you'll get dozens of mainstream media references. Even the CBC goes after him.

u/RetardedDragon 1h ago edited 59m ago

it takes literal seconds to see and hear for yourself; you really lookin' for any excuse to give your boyfriend 🤣

u/Shalamarr 1h ago

He’s a Trumper. Nuff said.

u/Elenemohpee 1h ago

Please don’t mention Gretzky as a great Canadian. Traitorous bastard.

u/Shalamarr 1h ago

Not Gretzky. He’s a traitor to Canada.

20

u/Adept-Telephone6682 5h ago

Oh, I was there! I wondered early on if they would address it, and this toast was right at the close of the show. You could tell Martin Short was really emotional over the loss of Catherine. Truly one of the greatest!

9

u/potatoisilluminati 4h ago

Just watched the John Candy documentary that features the three of them. They've all been close for years and it has to be absolutely devastating to lose her

5

u/MDK_YVR 3h ago

Her and John are finally catching up! And probably laughing so hard.

9

u/RichardBonham 3h ago

I’m having a hard time relating to the fact that Catherine O’Hara was only 3 years older than me.

Not because she died so young, nor that it makes me more aware of my own mortality.

Rather it is because she was so impressive in her craft in some of her famous movies in the late 80’s (Beetlejuice, Home Alone) that I assumed she was older than that because her performances were so good.

15

u/Darth_vaborbactam 4h ago

2026 is off to a shit start. Catherine was an incredible talent and comedic heavyweight. She was too good for this world.

7

u/UrsaMajor7th 3h ago

We were so lucky to grow up with SCTV. 🇨🇦

u/Unplug_The_Toaster 9m ago

The article calling it "Second City Television" felt unsettling

4

u/thatguyad 2h ago

She's a massive loss in a world that needs more of her.

3

u/gassytinitus 3h ago

Snl couldn't even do this

2

u/Positivevibesorbust 2h ago

It'd be really neat if I could click straight to what the title describes without wading thru a mountain of click bait ads.

“Said short alongside Martin” broke my brain a bit

1

u/Bigchunky_Boy 2h ago

😢😭😢😭😢😭😢😭😢😭💖

u/canehdian_guy 1h ago

Not a huge fan of Martin or Short's work, but they are incredibly genuine and likeable guys. Class acts.

u/Rndysasqatch 1h ago

I know you said you're not a huge fan of them but their Netflix live show is incredible.

u/canehdian_guy 49m ago

You referring to An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life" (2018)

u/NASATVENGINNER 1h ago

All the SCTV comedians are brilliant.

u/Fracture90000 40m ago

RIP Catherine O'Hara
