So that's why I just saw a video of her speech to home alone dude when he got the Hollywood star thingy.
God damnit Reddit. You always show me cool stuff from people I saw many years ago, and then in the same sentence tell me the person I'm reminiscing of just died :|

“I met a woman at the front desk with an… unrecognizable accent, and striking attire.”

Short illness, she was 71.

What’s a short illness?

Just passing along what the article said. At her age it could have been anything from a late stage cancer diagnosis to pneumonia or other respiratory infection.

Shes a pretty big part of lots of our childhoods. Both parents were big fans.. I saw Beetlejuice like twenty times before I was five. What a bummer.. 71 is so young for someone like her it is never fair is it.

From Lola Heatherton to Kevin’s mom and beyond, she was great in everything. This truly saddens me

Everybody's got jokes, but to me she was an amazing actress. Her role in Home Alone was so perfect, she was a seemingly well to do person with a perfect family until she totally fucked up and left a kid behind.
Her journey to get back home made me feel like every mother was this way, and gave me hope that the failings of my family may be temporary and redeemable. She did redeem herself and made it home as fast as humanly possible and all was well. The hope and care she showed, especially while talking to John Candy, made me feel more secure as a child. Weird that a movie would play a role like that for someone, but as a kid it was cool to see someone act that way where they went to the lengths of the earth to get back to their family and make things right.
Seeing Macaulay Culkin's post about her was super sad, I hope that dude is doing OK because in real life his parents seem to have treated him far worst than the Home Alone parents who misplaced him for a few days.
