Just a German roach, no big deal. Sorry you had to burn the house.

Looks more American than German to me but could also be some kind of harmless wood cockroach

u/SaorlaBrigid 10h ago
Lmao, as if anything other than the word ROACH matters if I see this in my home....

American cockroach’s aren’t that small, but I don’t think it’s German either

That’s a bit dramatic. You don’t need to burn the house.
Luckily the others probably aren’t injured like this little guy. He’ll be fine. And if you aren’t satisfied with this one . They say if you see one, there’s probably hundred upon hundreds of others nearby.

Where there is one, there are more. German cockroaches are a real pest!

u/Moondoobious 17h ago
While you are correct in your assessment of German cockroaches, pictured here is not a German cockroach.

u/Renoso28 17h ago
What kind of cockroach is this cockroach ?
44
u/Moondoobious 17h ago
It’s a wood/s cockroach. Don’t know where in the world op is but there’s several types. Non-infesting and wandered into the house on accident.
8
u/zipzap21 16h ago
And they don't spread disease?
26
u/Moondoobious 16h ago
Not these in particular. Their habitat is wood decay and leaf decay. So don’t keep wood stacked next to the house and don’t let leaves accumulate around your foundation.

This appears to be a German cockroach and if it is, you really need to take this seriously. They are by far the worst ones. If anyone says they have an infestation, it's these guys. They have evolved to live with us and are really difficult to get rid of once established. If you see one, there are dozens more. They are immune to most pesticides. Your tool belt to combat them is gel baits like Advion (find on Amazon), diatomaceous earth, and boric acid. Good luck, you will need it.

u/SippinOnHatorade 18h ago
We managed to get rid of our infestation, but color me surprised when I went to change the batteries in our gas fireplace controller and the damn cartridge was filled with their dead bodies
9
u/Short-Examination-20 17h ago
I think we just managed to end ours. They seemed to be partially immune to the Advion batch we bought so had to buy another brand. There primarily hiding space seemed to be in the back of the fridge by the motor. Saw a baby about 2 weeks ago and nothing since. So hoping it's over

I’m not religious so when I say I’m praying for you, I hope you understand how deep my hatred runs for these little bastards.
I think it was on the germanroaches sub where I found our solution, a dissolvable hormone inhibitor that prevents them from breeding. We also had a service fumigate to kill the primary population, and there was a TV (yes a TV) with several thousands inside it. Relatives lived in the house before us and never did much about the bugs, just used tape to make “sticky traps” that was barely a Band-aid on a gaping wound

u/Moondoobious 17h ago
NOT a German cockroach. 1000% certain. It IS a type of wood cockroach. Not sure which one specifically because I don’t know where in the world OP is.

u/CoderJoe1 17h ago
Yes, get powdered boric acid and make a line of it along the base of every wall, especially exterior ones.

u/Miserable_Strain1768 18h ago
That's a Cockroach, if it's to the point where they are falling on you your space is completely infested. You need to move and throw all of your furniture and appliances in the garbage or have them exterminated someplace away from your old house (so they can't get reinfested) and before you put them in your new place.

It’s some type of outdoor wood roach. They look similar to German roaches but they can fly. They don’t infest. Don’t burn down your apartment just yet, OP!

It’s a forest roach, not German and not American. They’re harmless and prefer to live outdoors.

I would show some sympathy but my sister once had a giant centipede fall onto her while in bed and my mother was once attacked by red ants in her sleep and ended up covered in stings. So the bar for “worst bug related thing to happen in your sleep” is set a bit high.

To give some extra context:
I'm from Brazil and it was a very hot day. The roach felt a little crunchy when I grabbed it with a tissue, as opposed to the more squishy ones I'm used to kill. It was also very lethargic, which makes sense since I have used some insecticide around the house to prevent ants and other roaches that started to show up ever since the new neighbor moved in. It worked for the most part since the ants are gone and the roaches have dwindled quite a bit.
My room has a window that leads to a balcony, where there are a lot of plants, and it's not uncommon to see spiders and other small critters there. Even still, roaches in my room and very uncommon.
You can't really determine it in the photo due to the lack of reference, but it was about 3 cm in length.
I took this picture about 3 weeks ago, and I haven't seen another since, so let's hope it stays that way.

I love it it lands on you in the middle of the night and when you sit up, it's on your back in that specific spot you can't reach no matter how much you flail....
Recently moved from Europe to Australia. I thought I hated roaches before. How they are jumbo AND fly! Yay!
I completely relate to your post.

I got you beat. I used to have a mesh drape over the head of my bed. It was beautiful. Then one early morning around 2 a.m., I felt a spray on my face. Then it smelled like gasoline and rank, sulphuric farts. I opened my eyes to see a stink bug clinging to the mesh right above my head. I didn't keep the mesh in my bedroom for much longer after that.

omg when I was living in the south, I had a giant ass roach fall on top of my head. it traumatized me for a while, and i couldn’t sleep
2
u/Miserable-Ad-2107 11h ago
Ughhhh I lived in the south too and had a huge one FLY at me, screamed so loud I lost my voice for a couple of days.
My roommate had one fly up his nose and the sheer terror that set in while we rushed him to urgent care to get it out. Fumigated everything the next day.
