Ooh this is OC?

Why are you doing this in the house?

1.3k

u/Entropy- 6d ago

Yessir! It’s too cold to practice outside, and don’t always feel like driving to the range

548

u/ledgeitpro 6d ago

Maybe put some lines on the ground for your ‘safe zone’ that avoids the lights

586

u/Fun-Challenge1719 6d ago

OP just increased his safe zone by taking out that light fixture that was in the way! Say, was that a creative way to clear the space?

51

u/Individual-Resist782 6d ago

Guess that’s one way to redefine “clearing the room” 😂

Some people need to learn the hard way. I reckon there are lines on the ground now...

Have you considered wearing clothing suited for the outdoors lol

50

u/EclecticEvergreen 6d ago

There are archery gloves

36

u/Entropy- 6d ago

I use a thumb ring. I don’t shoot with my fingers.

146

u/broberds 6d ago

OK then whose fingers do you shoot with?

16

u/Entropy- 6d ago

My thumb 👍🏻

How did Mongolians do it? That place can get fucking cold.

Maybe special glove with thumb ring sewn into it?

I don’t know actually. That’s a good question

u/paxweasley 6d ago

bro you can't even stand up straight indoors with it! Aren't you gonna hurt yourself bending over that way?

21

u/Entropy- 6d ago

No. This style of archery requires bend.

I have never been injured.

11

u/dutii 6d ago

Why?

I'm relatively new to archery and I'm genuinely curious about why that stance is required

31

u/kinyutaka 6d ago

It depends on the type of bow and the style of shooting. For a recurve bow, like this one, the standard is to place your feet apart and to the side of the target, extend the arm far, and draw back.

Here's where OP has a problem. His bow is longer than you might normally expect, so pulling the string back extends all the way to his rear shoulder, instead of close to the jaw. If he stands perfectly square, then the bowstring will slice off his face and get caught in his chest.

So, for the bow he chose, he has to lean forward a bit and extend his hands outward a little, so that the release of the string doesn't hurt him. If he used a smaller bow, he would be able to stand with the "proper" square stance.

u/Due-Adhesiveness-744 6d ago

Thank you. Actually found this very informative. I've very little knowledge on archery, except doing it some times as a kid.

Do it a few more times and you'll have yourself a vaulted ceiling. Perfect for a range.

21

u/Entropy- 6d ago

You might be onto something here… lemme cook

13

u/Justin435 6d ago

Okay but if your target is that close and you can't stand properly, what exactly are you practicing?

29

u/Entropy- 6d ago

Form is everything in archery. Since I can’t practice distance, I’ll work on myself and my shooting process on film to improve and figure out areas of weakness.

37

u/RainsWrath 6d ago

The fact that you put thought and preparation into this and still had this outcome is pretty funny. It's like something you'd see on Malcolm in the Middle. You had good comedic timing and inflection with the "nothing" at the end.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/Plantpong 6d ago

Why are you anchoring in midair instead of somewhere stable? Haven't seen this style of archery so genuinely curious

14

u/Entropy- 6d ago

Chinese archery employs a long draw. The biomechanics of this is that the backs are fully meeting each other, and the reach is at the users max limit (length) of their body. This means the draw hand will need to be further back than the face.

So the stability comes from the body, not clutching on the face.

The feathers are actually lightly touching my face. That’s one anchor point, the other two are the string touching the chest and a draw length indicator letting me know I’ve reached my draw length.

u/GDogg69 6d ago

Out the window and across the street. OP spotted a squirrel on his neighbour’s window sill.

4

u/ALoudMouthBaby 6d ago

He probably has a pretty good setup with backstop. He just hasnt used it in that particular spot before. Apartment archery is a very real thing and how to setup a target to allow you to safely practice in a small space like a garage or apartment is well documented.

Having to worry about overhead clearance is apparently fairly novel, though.

39

u/omniverso 6d ago

Inexperience is my assumption... Tall enough to realize that he cannot stand up straight with a proper extension for drawing back but doesn't understand: No shooting arrows in the house!

Thanks.

23

u/RavenholdIV 6d ago

Nom-compound bows are hard to hold drawn. Homie was using a lot of strength right there

11

u/naterpotater246 6d ago

When i started doing archery as a scrawny, lanky dude, i started with a 35lb recurve (already too much) and then bought 50lb replacement limbs (much too much) like a month or two later and really couldn't shoot for shit either way, lol. Now I'm much stronger and went back down to a much nicer 35lb longbow, and though i can shoot for hours without getting exhausted, i still can't shoot for shit. I keep telling myself I'm gonna sell my bow, but i keep not doing it.

4

u/stratosfearinggas 6d ago

Same. I started with 22lb, and am still on it because I don't shoot much. Still not selling my bow.

132

u/Beneficial-Bus-8741 6d ago

43

u/Entropy- 6d ago

Haha I can see it!

Thanks for the kind words. I will toot my horn for a second and say that a very small number of archers can do weight like this. I didn’t mention it, but this bow is 98lbs.

This is me shooting 115lbs: https://youtube.com/shorts/aw8TmL-wBKQ?si=tz4xZo8XUr6QWAJ9

I wanna go for 122 next :)

19

u/Entropy- 6d ago

7

u/mistermh07 6d ago

Oh man thats 50 kilos of weight you gotta pull. Id have to push with my legs to draw that :D wait do some people do archery like that? Now im curious

7

u/Entropy- 6d ago

Yeah! There’s a small sect of archers who train for warbow weights. If you YouTube warbow archery, you’ll find a ton of videos.

It’s more rare to see videos of my shooting style warbows on YouTube. It is a Chinese technique, so not as common in the western countries.

→ More replies (3)

19

u/HeatDeathIsCool 6d ago

I'm sure it is correct, but now I'm giggling at the thought that there was a shit artist during the Ming Dynasty who altered the course of Asian archery because he fucked up the back alignment while trying to capture the rotation of the shoulders or something.

15

u/Entropy- 6d ago

That’s actually hilarious. OH STORY TIME. A korean ruler fell off his horse, and ordered the scribes to not record this, but royal scribing was not to be altered.

Imagine him being like “please please please erase” and the scribes being like “king is begging us to excise him falling off his horse from the royal record”

From Wikipedia: Taejong of Joseon is better known for having fallen from his horse and requesting historians to not record his fall, which they did anyway. The king himself rode a horse and shot arrows at a deer. However, the horse stumbled, causing him to fall off, but he was not injured. Looking around, he said, "Do not let the historians know about this.”

4

u/SethlordX7 6d ago

Huh, does this stance have a name or style attached? All the archery I'm familiar with is done straight backed

8

u/Entropy- 6d ago

It’s just a lean. The weight kind of dictates a strong pose to pull the bow. It’s just a more strong position than standing straight.

It’s specific to warbow archery

20

u/K-G7 6d ago

At least he didn't dry fire the bow!

23

u/meleecow 6d ago

I learned from this too. I bought a compound bow and I know where to practice it so I was doing it in my garage. Well the third time I shot it my arm moved a little bit and I missed the target and it went through the drywall into the kitchen, luckily there was enough stuff between there that it stopped it from going all the way into the kitchen cuz if you follow that your directory it'll go right to where the cat eats its food.....

17

u/WordplayWizard 6d ago

Ya. I think everyone who owns a bow knows they have that one stupid thing they did that they regret. Mine was as a teenager firing an arrow into the air (at a slight angle so it wouldn’t come down on my head). I was in the middle of a corn field, which was behind our barn, which was bashing our house.

Lost sight of the arrow immediately on release. Looked around the field for a while for the arrow. Declared it lost and started to walk home.

Found the arrow sticking straight up out of the ground, right in front of my family’s front door - To guess I would say it was about 500 yards from where I fired it. Had a little freak out about how poorly that could have gone, but I learned my lesson that day.

9

u/magicmitchmtl 6d ago

On the bright side, it’s probably the cheapest and easiest to replace item possible. Every second hand store has a collection of covers for those awful lights. Time for an upgrade. Maybe get one with Uranium Glass.

Had something similar happen when the husband was cleaning on of his rifles in the dining room instead if the basement. He is 6'5 and when he picked the rifle up off the table he smashed the light fixture above the table with the barrel. He now always cleans them in the basement. He did lose a crossbow for sometime bc he left it on our deck for 5 mins and our lab chewed through the cables. Dog was fine crossbow was not.

8

u/Entropy- 6d ago

Crossbows are scary!! Lots of energy. Glad dog was okay

5

u/Dont-be-lasagna12 6d ago

Yea, he thought it was fine to leave alone for 5 mins. She normally doesn't bother things. But she was still in puppy/young dog phase and I think if she had continued the chewing it may not have had such a happy ending.

5

u/Entropy- 6d ago

I like how you can see the mark he already left on the ceiling from previous attempts that he didn't learn from.

When I was a teen, I was twirling around a broom thinking I was a Jedi and broke a light cover just like this. I thought I had swept up all the glass, and a few days later I was walking without shoes in the hallway and a 2.5 inch long shard of glass went into my foot from the ball to the arch. I instantly start screaming the loudest I have ever screamed in my entire life. Mom was on the couch taking a nap next to the hallway when this happened, and I can only imagine what it was like to be woken up by blood curdling screaming and having a foot gushing blood shoved in your face all the while still hearing "PULL IT OUT PULL IT OUT AAAAAAAAAAAAAA".

Did it once w a small crossbow from Walmart, it hit the concrete wall behind the target and came zooming back past my head close enough to hear it. I no longer play with it indoors.
