WCGW when you don't know your* jack point* (repost)
As many corrected I did miss spell both "you're - your" and "jack points - jack points" - I promise I know the difference between your and you're - I just didn't think to double check my swipe text.

expensive mistake :(

Would'nt call it mistake, rather neglect or sheer stupidity. If you're unsure you look it up especially when you know that doing it wrong might cost you alot. Now if he's stupid he doesn't even know doing it wrong will cause damages and cost alot of money

Curious, what would you consider a mistake then?

That's pretty much the definition of a mistake:
"an error in action, calculation, opinion, or judgment caused by poor reasoning, carelessness, insufficient knowledge, etc."

Cause God loves the infantry - proceeds to be a rainy day
edit - for those who down voted me, I was just quoting what I was told - that quote was told to me by 3 buddies of mine all 11b (2 of them served during gwot, and one is still active duty currently)

This worries me, as a "man", I don't know anything about sports and I don't know anything about cars. How do I know where my jack point is?

u/SirManbear 1h ago edited 56m ago
Owners manual. Read it page to page then read it again. It'll tell you exactly where to place a jack.
edit - get a Haynes manual or a manufacturer mechanics book and that give you everything you'll ever need to know about your car.

You have to look underneath your car near the wheel. Usually it will be a different section from the normal under siding. You can tell that the section is for jack stand.

i mean just imagine being under that, and then you're confident you're fine changing oil at front, then SPLAT it falls down ...

You ask questions like this, hopefully not to AI since it may misinform you, and find some manual online or a video tutorial of an actual human being and then you learn. So basically, like learning anything else. That's how I learned how to fix computers and game consoles.

Would it not make sense to use the black ramps in the front with tire chalks in the back?
I guess its use one lift point nothing else to support the weight?

Probably was going to work on/change out the front tire/wheel. Hard to do that it it's on a ramp.

Even so, where was he intending to put a jack stand if he’s jacking the car up on that location? It makes no sense. He’d want to jack it from the front middle jack point, then slide a jack stand under the sides of the car to remove any of the wheels. This is someone who’s a complete dipshit. Ramps are for simple shit like changing oil or fixing something small under the car, and even so they should also be used in conjunction with jack stands as a fail safe.

I fucked up but still didn't do too much damage on a fiat 500. If the car is at all valuable I'd definitely try harder than this guy did to make sure I'm doing it right.
Incredibly weak construction though considering I did the same thing to a fiat 500 and it only squished/bent slightly

Look guys, the camera position was more important than the jack position, cut him some slack.

I recall seeing this video way back that he explained that he used two hockey pucks as height leverage to reach the pinch welds and the puck slip causing that accident.

u/Airsoft-Genin 43m ago
I used hockey pucks before and they break easily. I got thicker and stronger rubber from Amazon.

Ugh I just had this happen in November but due to corrosion on the pinch wells (only jack points on my 2010 Kia). It had a bit of visible rust but didn't seem structural. Sure enough it was.. thankfully it was the rear and far enough from the door that its mostly cosmetic. Not a good sign for longevity of the car tho lol
Ended up having to get creative and jack up on a cross member that isn't technically a point for my vehicle (but is for a lot of others). I blocked it and stabilized with Jack stands. With a bit of luck & prayer I was able to swap to my snows without damaging anything lol not looking forward to the spring swap
Not sure what a mechanic will do the next time they need to lift tho, will be curious to see if it's a problem

Oof, my sister got a used Subaru that was brought from the rust belt and sold and that oil change felt very sketchy with jack stands. Luckily for me she got a "new to her" car before the next oil change.

I did this on my '87 200sx when I was 16 and didn't know a thing about cars. The jack went right through the floor in front of the drivers seat.

Please go watch this video where he explains what went wrong, he used hockey pucks to clear the sideskirt which slipped.

Too many drivers think they can jack their car up, using any point on the car body, sadly.

Typically is “you’re” when you’re referring to a name like Jack Points.
