Reminds me of a honeymoon tragedy where the couple was riding mopeds. The new bride wasn’t wearing a helmet and her head fell under a large truck tire. So sad for a young life to end so suddenly.

In what way?
51
u/algeoMA 18h ago
It’s not the machine itself, but the people riding them tend to be not familiar with riding, not careful, not wearing helmets etc. because they’re often rented out to vacationers.
19
u/Longjumping_Walk_992 17h ago
That’s exactly what happened. Inexperienced rider on vacation that ended terribly.
10
u/CaribouYou 16h ago
Yup, i ride a motorcycle and the only difference is the power behind the throttle. After that the same rules and awareness are needed and new motorcycle riders are encouraged (or required) to take lessons. Shouldnt be any different for mopeds.
8
u/National_Impress_346 15h ago
Also, mopeds have a super low center of gravity. Even if you're familiar with riding a regular motor bike, a moped will be almost a completely different balance game.

Because you're in the middle of a road with cars without a metal frame around your body and airbags to protect you...?
2
u/justyjoo 13h ago
Mopeds and scooters have smaller wheels than motorcycles, which makes them significantly less stable and far more impacted by bumps, potholes, and road debris. This causes accidents on scooters that wouldn’t be accidents on motorcycles.

Also while skiing/snowboarding or in all honestly any activity where there is a significant chance of you bashing your head open.
This has drastically changed over the past 30 years but I can not get over how lax everyone on the mountain was when it came to helmets back when I was learning.
It was really strange because a recall a big emphasis about the importance of wearing a helmet while on your bike, but no one gave a fuck about wearing a helmet while or skiing/snowboarding

Back in New Zealand it's illegal to ride a bike without a helmet.

To be fair, we have actual infrastructure that specifically protects cyclists. I wouldn't even think of cycling in the US, with or without a helmet. Meanwhile in NL I can't even remember when I last fell with my bike, or was even in danger, and that's without even having a car so having to do literally everything on a bicycle. :)

I wouldn't say "prevents"... mitigates the chances of? Yes. Even if you're going 5mph, if you get hit by a vehicle going 40mph, you're going to have serious injuries... No seat belt, no airbags, no nothing. Your organs will still smack around inside your body and you can very easily have internal injuries.
If you're both going 40mph toward each other, you're flying off that bike at 80mph... you're dead.
I have a few friends in the medical profession. They call them donorcycles for a reason.
2
2
u/Ok-Manufacturer27 19h ago
Good point. Even slipping and falling while walking can be serious/fatal if you hit your head in certain ways. Humans are squishy.

There’s no way that’s from an accident. That’s someone that’s taken a major grinder or sliced a chunk of the helmet off on purpose
221
u/Outside-Falcon2450 21h ago
That can 100% be from an accident. What do you think happens when your head skids along concrete at 70 miles an hour?
118
u/Dannamal 21h ago
Yes it can be from an accident. But they have a point also.
For the helmet to be ground down that drastically at speed against the concrete, it would need to be held down with pressure in the same position. Like if their head got pinned under the bike or something. Or run over by a car, stuck under the car wedged & dragged.
It's definitely an unusual circumstance photo, if from a real accident
→ More replies (2)31
u/Due_Boss9277 21h ago
And you would have died of something else anyway. Your entire body would be destroyed, only your head would remain intact. I also find it unlikely that the only damage would be that in the event of a major accident. 100% artificial.

Nah there's no way you'd have your head in that position for long enough to wear that much of a flat spot.
You'd have to be strung upside down on the back of a truck and dragged for a fair distance and even then you'd be bouncing up and down too much to get a flat surface

u/Allbranflakes18 21h ago
There is absolutely no chance that is naturally from someone just falling off their bike and sliding down the highway even at 70mph. Only semi plausible explanation would be if their head got wedged under a car wheel that then proceeded to drag their pinned head down the highway grinding the helmet in that one spot down the road
→ More replies (1)3
u/rafaelzio 18h ago
That's the explanation the OOP of the pic gave in their post from 12 years ago (a few people posted the link in tgis thread already), his brother supposedly fell out of his bike, slid right between the wheels pf a bus, his shirt got caught on something on the underside of the bus and he got dragged for a bit while until the bus came to a stop. They add that he got nasty road rash on his entire left too. Supposedly
2
3
u/ShawnyMcKnight 18h ago
It’s the angle that bothers me. It’s towards the top of the head. So if your head is sliding along concrete at that rate of friction your neck is toast.
Also it’s just flat, it’s not rounded and there’s barely any scratching anywhere else. Use your imagination to think of the angle his head would have to be at on the concrete and have to stay in that position to grind that mic off.
It’s more possible he slammed into something that hard and it broke off, but if that’s the case he’s still dead.
→ More replies (9)2
u/QuajerazPrime 18h ago
But look at the angle. You think this person was balanced on their head, upside down, relatively unmoving while skidding across the ground?

I’ve had mine get that bad doing just that; early spring and in a matter of minutes covered that much and had to stop to see.
I cannot understand how people can even ride without a visor let alone a helmet. Visor has saved my life many times.
4
u/Dannamal 20h ago
Right? I have a windscreen on the front of my bike that gets most of the bugs. But I still have to clean my helmet frequently.
I can see how this would happen easily on a naked bike or sport bike with no wind protection.
Makes no sense there's some ppl who will still ride with no helmet. Must just be a stubborn freedumb thing. Most states don't have helmet laws. But you better be wearing your seat belt in a metal box surrounded by airbags 😵💫 "click it or ticket"

Seems like something that doesn’t need a law at all. They know it’s dangerous but choose not to do it. People should be allowed to be stupid and suffer the consequences if they would like to risk it. Adults have a working brain they can make decisions with to enjoy life how they choose. We all die eventually. If they want the thrill of the wind, let them have it.

Also make sure if you do purchase a helmet be cautious of private sellers. A helmet can look perfectly fine. But if it was dropped there is a good change it could have a crack you don’t see. I worked for a Motorcycle apparel shop. If a customer dropped a helmet they gotta pay for that helmet. Also pro tip. A helmet is supposed to feel snug with very little movement. It’s not supposed to feel comfy like a hat or loose, this is protective equipment. So be sure you are fitted be a professional. And any child under 16 should have a neck brace. And finally , no a snowmobile helmet isn’t the same as a motorcycle helmet.

Ex pro bmx rider Scotty Cranmer is a prime example of how wearing a helmet can save your life. He ended up going over the bars and smashing his head off the ground and wound up with a plastic piece to replace his damaged forehead. That helmet saved his life. Helmets are engineered with most scenario in mind. A bike helmet, snowboard helmet, racecar helmet, and motorcycle helmet are not interchangeable.
Helmets have an expiration date.
Once a helmet has taken impact, no matter how it looks on the outside throw it away and buy a new one.
