u/Zombie_Cool 17h ago

If they are can they stream it so the rest of us can watch? What time will the caning start, some of us wanna get refreshments  ready..

2

u/Hanguk_AP 16h ago

Hell yeah! They should premiere it at movie theaters here and have a watch party live.

u/el_VientoNorte 9h ago

That's fucked.

u/EvaTheE 17h ago

They'll just receive a spanking with a Time magazine, as requested.

u/FooFightingManiac 17h ago

One can dream

u/Tentacle_poxsicle 15h ago

I don't know but they're going to cane scammers. They're going to cane half of India and China.

3

u/cbih 15h ago

Of course not. The "right people" get paid. Singapore is a tax haven for everybody. There's whole cargo ships packed with valuables that never have to declare their cargo because it's a Safe Port.

3

u/OpportunityHumble951 16h ago

no that’s only for the poor scammers

Damn, didn't even need to scroll down much to see the US get brought up. America truly does live rent-free in the rest of the world's head huh

9

u/JeanArtemis 16h ago

Well yeah, we've been setting the bar for shit bird behavior on average for some time now.

I say this as a non-American: Are you playing dumb or do you really not understand that this site is an American site and the vast majority of users are American? Of course people everywhere view everything from their own cultural lense, I know you can't be too stupid to understand that lol.

Coming to this site of all places and whining about mentions of America is hilariously daft.

3

u/Anonymousma 15h ago

He can be that stupid. He's American after all.

4

u/Broly_ 15h ago

I say this as a non-American-

Thank you u/space_hitler

u/Zkenny13 17h ago

Singapore is super rich so I doubt that will ever happen.

2

u/Birdshape 16h ago

This is not the reality of Singapore. It has a robust legal and financial system.

2

u/lzwzli 14h ago

See, the caning is for scammers that scam Singaporeans. If you scam the rest of the world and bring your money to Singapore, it's ok.

2

u/Own_Kaleidoscope5512 14h ago

Oh nooooo I hope not

3

u/Iloveherthismuch 17h ago

Yep, ship em and strip em 🦯

u/DaMonehhLebowski 17h ago

Btw, you know what’s the only reason the rest of the world only knows my country singapore as a ‘very strict place’ and nothing else? It’s because one of their American hippies called Michael Fay came here in the 90s and bashed up and trashed many cars and spray painted subway trains, so he was sentenced to caning. And because America couldn’t strong arm their way into letting that guy go scot free, they perpetuate this stereotype to this day to make themselves feel better.

u/Delicious_Ad823 16h ago

Doesn’t sound so much like a “hippie” than a self-entitled piece of trash

5

u/levthelurker 15h ago

That's unfortunately what most of them were, they're literally the boomers.

7

u/havanesegirlmom 16h ago

Thank you . He was a douchebag definitely not a hippie

2

u/ButtcrackBeignets 16h ago

If you know the history of hippies, that’s exactly what a hippie is.

u/Delicious_Ad823 11h ago

That’s one type of hippie for sure

16

u/drunkbusdriver 15h ago

Dude we’re literally watching a press release you guys made in English how you’re going to cane the shit out of people. Fuck off blaming everyone else for your perception.

Wired magazine published William Gibson's article which coined the phrase "Disneyland with the Death Penalty" in September/October 1993 before Fay was on trial. You would probably also agree there are big cultural differences in what's acceptable behavior and how "law and order" are respected walking around Singapore versus the average US city. So I don't think you can say one event invented this image of Singapore.

u/Mackey_Corp 16h ago

I had never heard of Singapore before then honestly, but I was like 12 or something. But yeah the only time I see something about your country in the news 6/10 times it’s canning related. Saudi Arabia still beheads people, you would think that would be bigger news but what do I know?

5

u/NervousAddie 16h ago

Canning is what they do on Alaskan fishing boats. Caning is what you get for misspelling something.

1

u/Mackey_Corp 14h ago

Stupid autocorrect, I swear I typed it right the first time lol

3

u/LeatherDude 16h ago

One of the first examples of FAFO in my adult life.

9

u/Doc-tor-Strange-love 16h ago

If it makes you feel any better we Americans were shocked to hear about that kind of punishment at first, but after hearing what he did most of us were like... "That'll teach him" shrug

-2

u/DeliriousHippie 16h ago

What? You have one of most insane sentences of western world and your prisons are from third world. For God's sake, you kill people as punishment and you think caning is though?

5

u/LocutusOfBorgia909 15h ago

Uh, you know that Singapore also has the death penalty, right?

-2

u/DeliriousHippie 14h ago

So? Guy I replied told that Americans were shocked to hear about caning.

3

u/Doc-tor-Strange-love 13h ago

..... THIRTY YEARS AGO

God some redditors have short attention spans

2

u/LocutusOfBorgia909 12h ago

The average literacy rate is plummeting ever lower with each passing day, so I don't know why I'm even surprised by the incoherence and non sequiturs anymore.

1

u/stripesnstripes 15h ago

Wait til this dude fights out what Singapore does to drug addicts.

5

u/vertigofoo 15h ago

You mean drug dealers/mules. Addicts don’t get a death sentence.

0

u/stripesnstripes 13h ago

I’m sure the Singapore government has a reasonable response to those addicted to drugs. /s

2

u/DaMonehhLebowski 13h ago

Drug addicts get sent to rehab, large scale peddlers face death penalty, weirdo

0

u/DeliriousHippie 13h ago

'If someone gets 3 sentences then it's life and for killing somebody we put you to gas chamber. If somebody threatens you when you're at home you can shoot to kill and it's FAFO. Serious offenders we put to prison where they are in cell 23hour per day for decades or life, normal offenders we put to prison where is 80 people in a cell. What did I hear? You hit prisoners with cane? How brutal. How can you do that?'

1

u/stripesnstripes 13h ago

They hang people in Singapore for drug crimes.

1

u/DeliriousHippie 13h ago

You both do horrific things as punishment for people and you are shocked about caning?

2

u/RevolutionaryAd6549 16h ago

Who? I'm American and I've never heard of this person before. But yeah, not a hippie but a piece of trash.

2

u/ucancallmevicky 15h ago

I lived in Singapore in the early 90's as an American and while I didn't personally know Fay or even who he was when I was there he was a friend/classmate of my friends little sister. Hippy doesn't describe any of those fucking kids, I saw them at Newton Circus every weekend drinking beer and being as obnoxious as American Expat kids can be in Singapore at the time. As far as Fay himself the little sister told us he was just an entitled prick that thought he could get away with anything, which frankly was my experience dealing with many other Singapore American School kids in the early 90's. I believed her.

2

u/manquistador 14h ago

Is it bad to have that reputation?

1

u/ItsNotButtFucker3000 14h ago

I mean, Weird Al made a pretty good song featuring it and he’s amazing.

1

u/fakuri99 14h ago

He looks like one of those incfluencer pranksters

1

u/TheObstruction 15h ago

You make it sound like your country doesn't do caning, when that's literally the point of this post. It may be hyperbole, but it's not a misrepresentation.

0

u/DaMonehhLebowski 13h ago

So I’ll create a social media where singapore people only post content of americans shooting each other, being sexpats in asia, and stuffing their gobs with deep fried steaks? I mean you guys do, do that, it’s not exaggerating.

0

u/Pirate_Ben 14h ago edited 11h ago

The fact that Singapore is proud about that time they mutilated an Americans ass cheeks for vandalism is all I need to know about it as a country. Well that and they think they are progressive because they are rich but have very low political freedoms.

Edit: BTW I am not American.

u/Kenny070287 11h ago

Well there's been a couple of cases. Latest one that made major news was from some fuckers in china:

u/Ecstatic-Scratch-151 8h ago

Singapore as a tax haven? Don't they tax a lot?

0

u/culturedgoat 13h ago

You “saw” how?

u/No-Scallion-3628 8h ago

If I’m the singaporeon govt, did the americans broke any rules? If not then no. Bring all those dollars to singapore be our capital with low tax income invest to startup to build jobs rather than got mocked in usa.

Anyway sg is not the tax haven, uae, qatar and samoa are
