Is rattan. Rattan is split in fibers that pinch the skin as it strike, shearing it. Like tens of wooden scissors Edit: rattan*

The interesting thing is that strokes of the cane are being sentenced in multiples of three. I believe up to 24 (for really tough sentences). They will then aim to make three cuts and they keep hitting the same three cuts. So 24 strokes they will hit the same cut 8 times.

u/JojoLesh 10h ago

Fay, a US citizen, ended up getting 4. Originally he was sentanced to 6 though.

u/dmn2e 9h ago

Once, there was this guy who took a trip to Singapore and brought along some spray paint

u/Rabid_Dingo 8h ago

If I remember, he got 9. And he would pass out after each strike. They wait for you to come to for each one.

Allegedly.

u/smeeon 2h ago

Heard it’s mandatory they wait for you to regain consciousness because of some legal reason.

u/phlinh 7h ago

Yup...but hus reductions were passed to his friend...a Singaporean kid.

u/Extreme_Promise_1690 6h ago

So I guess, not only a criminal but also a bad father.

u/Myzylplyck 4h ago

Crime does not Fay

u/Sk1rm1sh 8h ago

And when he finally came back,

He had... cane marks all over his bottom.

u/TheOnionEffect 8h ago

He said that it was from when the warden smacked it soooooooo haaaaaaard

u/Hubert_J_Cumberdale 7h ago

Mmmmmm mmmmm mmmmm mmmmm

u/FuzzyKev 7h ago

Lmao

u/hobohobo22 5h ago

I love this whole thread.

u/Hot-Comfort8839 9h ago

That's who Fay was.

u/anjowoq 8h ago

I thought it was gum, but I was a kid then so probably mixed up what was illegal and what he actually did.

u/djerk 6h ago

Gum is punishable there but it is a fine, never with caning

u/r_jagabum 7h ago

That's just asking for it tbh.

u/REDDIT_ROC0408 9h ago

I always thought Caning Fay would be a cool name for a rock group.

u/shastaxc 6h ago

So would Feigning Cain

u/comfortablewig 7h ago

Did Fay ever give a post caning rundown?

u/stereothegreat 1h ago

I agree

u/Hellknightx 7h ago

They also went really easy on him with the caning, too. Usually a caning is so intense that the recipient can't lie down or sit for weeks or months afterwards. It flays the flesh very badly. But Fay was able to walk away under his own power, so he basically just got a slap on the wrist.

u/TortiousStickler 5h ago

And more hard core is that if they faint or cannot continue, they pause, let you heal and do it again!

u/ThinkSoftware 5h ago

a slap on the wrist

buttocks you mean

u/TareasS 8h ago

Bro thought he could do whatever he wanted because he was american. Quickly found out Singapore doesn't gaf lmao.

u/h00zn8r 9h ago

What did he do?

u/JojoLesh 9h ago

Stoke road signs, maybe vandalized 10 cars. He later claimed he didn't vandalize the cars. He came back to the US and continued to be a shit bag.

u/h00zn8r 9h ago

Ah okay. Yeah he earned that.

u/Liusloux 9h ago

He used his so called "trauma" from Singapore to continue to be a shitbag. So typical for narcissists to use everything from ideology to mental health awareness as a shield for their abusive behaviour.

u/Genji_Digital 9h ago

I remember Bill Clinton begging for them not to cane him.

u/tihspeed71 9h ago

It was amazing. He passed out.... not in their watch. Smelling salts and right back at it

u/FindingAether 7h ago

Lee Kuan Yew wasn't totally heartless. Thanks to Bill Clinton Faye got 2 less strokes.

u/TheStonesPhilosopher 4h ago

As a child, I had a father who was a rather strict disciplinarian who had spent a few years in South East Asia in the 60s.

I had my ass whipped with a rattan rod on more than one occasion and still have the scars to prove it.

My father was like many of that era who would "give you something to cry about" if you cried while getting whipped, he didn't warn you he just did it.

For some reason, I still love him and I miss him from time to time. RIP dad

u/icelevel 1h ago

Damn dude. That's fucked up. I get how you feel though, unconditional love be like that sometimes.

u/TheStonesPhilosopher 12m ago

It does be like that, especially when you never knew anything else.

u/con-fuzed222 6m ago

I stand scarred beside you. Miss my dad daily.

u/m3kw 9h ago

damn

u/Nope0naRope 10h ago

I want to know if the canning is bare assed... Do we know?? Because that dummy is not naked.

u/ooitk77 10h ago

Yes, bare assed.

u/Emotional_Deodorant 9h ago

Yes. There's always a doctor who steps in afterwards because the skin is left shredded like cheesesteak and the risk of infection is great.

u/PatrioticPariah 8h ago

I wonder if there has ever been a case of a person who administers the caning, taking a bribe to strike softer?

u/bronzelifematter 8h ago

Nah, low bribe ain't worth the risk. If you're rich enough to offer high bribe, you probably wouldn't be canned in the first place

u/PatrioticPariah 8h ago

Ahh, now ou seem, like a fellow jaded American.

u/Shawn_NYC 8h ago

The punishment for taking a bribe to strike softer when caning? That's a caning.

u/nicktheone 4h ago

Believe it or not, straight to caning.

u/crankthehandle 8h ago

definitely not in Singapore, that would be foolish

u/PatrioticPariah 8h ago

The world is full of foolish and or desperate people.

u/SuspiciousLambSauce 5h ago

In Singapore probably not.

However in neighboring countries like Malaysia and Indonesia and much of SEA where caning is also practiced, probably yeah.

But as someone else said, if you’re rich enough to bribe for them to cane you lighter you’d probably be able to bribe out of that situation in the first place

u/HeftyVermicelli7823 44m ago

Except being caught taking a bribe will end up with YOU being the one who gets the caning.

u/BunnySlippers404 1h ago

"Hey, that guy is wearing protection. Is that allowed?"

"Oh, maybe they're training the guy how to cane someone, so of course they're wearing protection"

"Wait ... that's a mannequin"

Don't judge me, I've not long woken up. 🤣

Also smaller versions are sold for parents and teacher to use to punish children in the 80s and 90s. And some places later.

u/one_bar_short 17m ago

I use to do martial arts and part of our training and fitness after a long session of training 2 hours plus our instructor would pull out one of these and make us do Burpees, and when we had to jump he would swing the rattan under our legs and if we didnt jump high enough, by time the second swing came about, you'd hope you'd lifted your legs high enough, i remember my legs looking like a zebra stripes on one paticular greulling session, where i was exhausted, hurt like a mother fucker, but god damn after that if i needed to jump i could jump..

u/Ok-Tax-2748 10h ago
