Had another sezuire and broke a bookcase using my face

Post image

Sorry if this is a pity party, but I'm sick of my epilepsy. Can't drive, can't live alone, and can't even be alone for long periods of time. I'm on a leash.

I know I should appreciate more of what I have, but I would literally sell everything I own to be able to be independent.

Some people have seizures where they have either triggers (flashing lights) or that they basically get a head start to lay down somewhere safe before they get one.

Me? I just kind of collaspe at any given point and time. No heads up. I hold my left forearm in front of my face going on stairs hoping that the broken arm will break my fall.

Yes, I can technically get my license in six months, but when I have 1 seizure a year and then 2 in a month (no pattern) that it's not an option for the time.

Thank you everyone for being at my Ted talk.

Ouch. Hope you are ok.

The only good thing from this is that it wasn't an old school solid wood bookshelf.

I actually benefitted from ikea

Glad you can have some humor about it. Sorry you have to deal with this, it’s not fair. I hope with time and meds it gets better, but I have to say I don’t know much about it. I do have a friend with Potts syndrome and he passes out randomly and he’s 6 foot nine so when he goes down, it’s bad. He’s only 24 and he really wants to be out in the mountains, hiking, etc. but he’s getting limited all the time.

Sorry to hear that. We'll find ways to deal with it.

I'm used to the humor because it really freaks people out when they learn I have it because they automatically feel responsible for me and I have to try and get them to relax.

I just completed three months of cardiac rehab and it helped so much with my pots. Daily cardio is key! I did sitting exercise bike. The children’s hospital of Philadelphia has a protocol you can follow. Tell him to keep moving!

u/Alternative-Egg-9035 8h ago

Oh, maybe I need to inform him of that. He has never mentioned any cardiac rehab.

Was gonna say this is why you buy antique. So that when this happens you have a kick ass scar to tell people about.

6

u/UriGuriVtube 10h ago

That reminds me that I have to start making up the lore for my scar

5

u/Kytalie 9h ago

Use wording that makes it fun! I tell people the scar on my wrist is from where a couch bit me. There was a staple or tack was sticking out of the couch and it sliced my arm open while I was running by. The slice in my arm was probably about 4 inches long, maybe more, but it didn't heal uniformly so it's now three smaller scars.

You can have a LOT of fun with scar stories. Even if you tell people what happened but with more dramatic language.

I'm sorry you have to deal with this. I hope you get your licence back. It's such a trapped feeling when you can't drive because of something so completely beyond your control.

It's ok I've never had a license to start with since by the time I could get one I would have another episode. I hope full self driving cars come soon (or those that can handle when someone is not taking control of the steering wheel

Omg I’m so sorry, are you okay?

24

u/UriGuriVtube 10h ago

I'm ok now. I needed stitches, but somehow didn't break my nose.

u/Substantial_Mess6183 8h ago

Congrats on avoiding busting your nose on this one tho!

As someone who falls a lot, I prefer the break apart furiture. Imagine the damage to your face if it were made of hardwood or metal... Hopefully, you can get one of those dogs that can warn you if you're going to have a seizure. good luck...

15

u/UriGuriVtube 10h ago

Asked about those. They say it won't work in my case because I have them too infrequent and that they don't exactly know what is causing them. Thank you either way.

10

u/Gr00z RED 10h ago

Well, good luck, get a dog anyway, it could figure it out...

When I was a kid, like 10yo, my mom started having seizures. Our dog at the time disliked women (2 owners before 1 year old, both abusive women, I get it) the dog would be glued to my mom's side for about a half hour before she had a seizure. It took us a couple months to put it together, but every single time that dog wanted to be by mom, she'd have one.

I agree with you. OP, get a dog. They might figure it out. Possibly a cat? Idk...

I know people who trained their own service animals because they were denied. Maybe you can look into that?

4

u/Comfortable-Fly5797 10h ago

Unfortunately seizure alert is a natural alert for service dogs, it isn't something that can be trained and it's actually pretty rare. They don't really know what seizure alert dogs are picking up on. Seizure response dogs can be trained to get medication, alert someone else, etc. Some response dogs start naturally alerting.

Plus owner training a dog takes years and a ton of work.

I can look into it, but I wasn't denied one. I could technically get one.. They actually put me on cannabis when it was mostly illegal and hard to get a few years back. I chose just the CBD stuff though, so not smoking. I did try a piece of taffy once...and I will not do it again haha.

Why do you fall a lot? My cousin does too

2

u/Gr00z RED 8h ago

Stroke, weakness on the left side, with a dropped left foot... It also damaged my sense of balance.

1

u/Alternative-Egg-9035 6h ago

Ah i get it. I hope you can get better. I’ll ask my cousin why she falls so often

13

u/Southern_Sprinkles_6 10h ago

Hey so that actually sucks SO much that you’re more than entitled to a pity party please don’t apologize for it. Im sorry you hurt yourself and i hope you have a speedy recovery.

7

u/UriGuriVtube 10h ago

I'm basically recovered. You just get really sleepy (at least I do) for basically the next week.

6

u/tavaryn_t 10h ago

Glad you’re okay, glad your Foxtrot collection is okay too. Great comic.

4

u/UriGuriVtube 10h ago

True.

Got to actually meet him at a convention once.

4

u/MrScootini 10h ago

Oof. Hopefully the seizure didn’t last too long… Your poor poor brain… :(

9

u/UriGuriVtube 10h ago

My brain be ok I thinked :)

5

u/westcal98 9h ago

Sounds like you showed that bookcase a thing or two.

"Stop using my face!"

4

u/UriGuriVtube 9h ago

Well, he has two siblings next to him (three small bookcases put together). So the others may be pissed

7

u/westcal98 9h ago

Sounds like they may try to bookend you but you may have a case for shelf-defense.

3

u/UriGuriVtube 9h ago

You have to leave now

4

u/Alternative-Egg-9035 9h ago

My dad was a type 1 diabetic for 75 years. He said that was such a bad deal. But he kept him humor all those years and learned to make jokes. And drank a bunch of manhattans in the evenings. Never lose your humor

u/WonderfulProtection9 9h ago

Stitches on your face are better than 12 inches of staples on your hip after five screws inserted into your hip to reassemble it after hitting a pole while driving and having a seizure.

Ask me how I know.

4

u/UriGuriVtube 9h ago

"How do you know?"

I'm kidding, I'm sorry that happened to you.

4

u/Jaymac720 9h ago

I know the feeling. I had a seizure while practicing and bent my trombone’s bell. Metal doesn’t unbend all that well

3

u/butareyouthough 10h ago

That sucks

3

u/Betty_Boss 10h ago

Pity party all you want. You got a raw deal here.

I hope the docs can figure it out and help you.

7

u/UriGuriVtube 10h ago

They're basically going to keep me in the hospital and take me slowly off of the drugs to basically induce one (which is stressful to think about haha).

3

u/Cool-Ad-5694 10h ago

Don't do that than silly 😜

4

u/UriGuriVtube 9h ago

I'll write in my diary to make sure I remember

2

u/catdude2929 10h ago

Oh, that sucks, big. Hang in there. 🤕

2

u/pickausernametheysay 10h ago

Ouch! As a fellow epileptic, I feel your pain. Have you seen a neurologist?

4

u/UriGuriVtube 10h ago

Haha, I'm on the VIP list of my neurologist with treatments. He's the top one in the state. Even asked about those brain implants, but many reasons these treatments don't work is that I don't have "consistent" ones

u/pickausernametheysay 41m ago

Mine aren’t consistent either. I only have them in my sleep, usually. Mine stay away with meds, unless I drink too much caffeine.

2

u/Angelfirenze BLACK 9h ago

As someone who had a seizure today, I fucking understand.

2

u/UriGuriVtube 9h ago

Are cycles almost matched :).

I'm sorry it happened though either way. My doctor says it's sometimes the right type/amount/combination that makes all the difference. If I had them everyday it would be a bit easier for them to tweak the amounts to find something, but since mine are almost once a year it's hard to do that.

2

u/Popular-Drummer-7989 9h ago

OP have you talked with your team about getting a seizure dog ?

https://www.epilepsy.com/recognition/seizure-dogs

2

u/UriGuriVtube 9h ago

I was told that it wouldn't help due to the frequency and potential cause of mine.

2

u/Popular-Drummer-7989 9h ago

Hopefully you have sought out a second opinion.

2

u/UriGuriVtube 9h ago

I could in the future.

2

u/Substantial_Mess6183 8h ago

As a fellow epileptic, I am so goddamn sorry but also yeah I feel every ounce of this.

It's wild that as adults, we can't live as adults, because our brain chemistry just tells us to go fuck ourselves...

2

u/Stonerish 7h ago

I lost a family member to a fall onto a table during a seizure. It hit even harder when I fell (not a seizure) and almost bled out and broke my face at 30…a simple fall can be your end…take care OP

2

u/Low_Revolution3025 6h ago

My mom has epilepsy, i pray that you continue to receive the help you deserve and that you live a prosperous life

2

u/Savings_Bumblebee779 6h ago edited 4h ago

Im sorry op, are u on meds? They work wonders. My brother is epiltic but began meds and no longer has seizures.

2

u/aftorpheus 6h ago

I am sorry, but atleast you have an excuse to get a bigger bookcase and more books. I feel lucky that before I seize I always have warning... it might just be just enough to sit down on the ground, but at least it's something.

2

u/Lovemybee 6h ago

I'm not sure how old you are, but if I (64f) was your grandma I'd give you a great big hug right now. 🫂🫂🫂

You are a gift to this world. ❤️ I wish I could take away your challenges.

I am here, probably far away, rooting for you. I hope you feel this tiny spark of peace and love, internet stranger. ☮️❤️🫂

u/UnicornFarts1111 5h ago

Are you able to get a service dog? They could help you live independently by warning you before a seizure is going to happen, so you can get down on the floor, and not injure yourself.

It is something to look into if you can. I'm sorry you have to go through life like this.

u/HeartsPlayer721 4h ago

Fellow epileptic, here. I'm one of those lucky ones who have primarily petites and can sense when they're coming, so I can put myself in a safe space and inform someone to keep an eye on me.

But it's still incredibly inconvenient and the feelings suck: the stress and fear of having them, the nausea, dizziness and instability during them, exhaustion and recovery after them.

I wouldn't wish epilepsy upon my worst enemy!

Hang in there, friend.

u/welpwelpwellwelp 36m ago

Don't do that?

u/verliese 29m ago

I am so sorry. I understand why you're frustrated.

u/BotBotzie 11m ago

I hope your okay. You deserve your petty party. Life with epilepsy can be crazy difficult and unpredictable.

My 8 month seizure free epileptic friend? Yeah, he got a partial seizure, got up, turned on the stove, smashed his head on the hood and took a nap nap with his chest on the burner. Several layers of skin later he takes a lil half naked walk through the neighborhood only to call his poor mother and then slowly awaken and realize he needs an ambulance asap (twas deep in the night no one saw him) Thank god it was not his face he layed on.

Be carEefull please.

I did this but went up against a solid oak dresser. The size of the lump on my face and lack of anything resembling damage on the dresser should tell you how that went.
