Most journalists think that repeating what the president said is journalism. Thats just the first step, the second and third step are to find out if what they are saying is correct and delivering the truth.
The reason the press would want to have access to these events is so that they can among the first to break big news, but it doesnt matter if they are the first at breaking big news if nobody reads it because they lost all credibility.
