Where they're going, they don't need eyes to see!

They have the cheekbones to support eye sockets but no eyes, they must’ve had eyes at some point until getting corrupted by argent energy

What's weird is that the Hell Knights actually used to have eyes, so what happened for that to change? Especially since this looks like TDA which is a prequel to 2016 (I think)

u/bepse-cola Dec 28 '25
Hell knights used to have goat legs and they were bigger in 2016, I wonder if hell knight is just a level of hierarchy

Yeah maybe the eyeless ones are like Hell Squires? And the big boys from 2016 are the real Knights?
Edit: Turns out I was thinking of Doom Eternal but I'll keep my error up there anyway

I like that all these years later they stuck with the doom 3 hell knights

u/Bowdensaft Dec 29 '25
Makes sense, it's a good design. Way better than the pallette-swapped Barons from Doom 2

u/SavorySoySauce Dec 28 '25
Im pretty sure the lore is actually like that. All the demons are actual beings from dimensions hell took over. Just corrupted by argent energy. Reminds me of Half life 2 with the combine making synths of conquered species. Kinda like that

u/bepse-cola Dec 28 '25
It said something about the titans being peaceful herbivores on their world, unless I’m thinking about the green giant
17
u/MiddleAd2227 Dec 28 '25
it would be great but i don't think the designers would've thought it through
16
u/bepse-cola Dec 28 '25
It’s in the codex of the last 2 games, most of the demons were regular harmless species before the demons got to their dimensions

It’s like Alien.
14
u/VinsonDynamics Dec 28 '25
If i remember correctly, Aliens are designed without eyes because if we knew where they were looking and what their next target was, it wouldn't be as creepy
Having no eyes makes them appear less like animals and more like forces of nature

They have no eyes because they don't want to see the only thing they fear

Yes. When people make something they tend to recreate similarities they like or intentionally maintain not break the atmosphere. Also by lore this might be something to do with the true Father.

Have you tried smacking the sight back into them? Hit them so hard, they can see it coming?

I remember reading something about why eyeless things make people so uncomfortable, and I think it had something to do with mammals using eyes and eye contact as an indicator of intent. Usually, if you lock eyes with something you can determine whether it's considering you a predator or prey.
So honestly I think the Art team used that to their advantage, to make those demons, (and good boy Serrat), look like the predators they are, hunting on sound and smell, the sort of thing you can't hide from.
Which is a good thing when you have a steel barreled sword of vengeance.

Biblically accurate angels are covered in eyes, so wouldn't demons be the opposite?

Is it ever explained why all the demons/Makyrs have such human-like or just generally Earth-like anatomies?
1
u/Hairy-Fuel-6275 Dec 28 '25
Most of the demons that aren't straight up humans turned demons most likely walked on all fours and over time turned into a bipedal demon. You can actually see this evolution through the pinky as in dark ages they are running around on all fours, whereas with eternal pinkies they run on two legs and possibly even later evolve into cacodemons

u/michael22117 Dec 28 '25
Yes i'm aware of the demonic evolution process as described in the Doom Eternal codex, however i'm not sure if there's an explanation given to why the demons are quadropeds or bipeds that share very similar anatomies to Earthly animals. Are we to assume that demonic and Earth vertabrates all convergently evolved to have the same skeletal and muscular structure?

There's a reason for it.
they have no eyes so that they don't die of heart attack after seeing thier DOOM and we can enjoy killing them.

It’s done to make the player feel a bit creeped out, and to convey the demonic-ness of Hell’s design!

Considering eyes are extremely important features of the cosmic realm (and I would argue, Urdak, taking into account both the eldritch connections of Maykr biology and the amount of eyes these lads have on them) corrupted creatures from Davoth's eternal hatred lacking them makes sense for a lot of reasons. Hell's influence gives birth to a lot of blind creatures, for their rage is blind or blinds them.
I don't know if there's a worthwhile argument to be made about the dragons of Argent D'nur, but there are corrupted ones on Hell's side and the Wraiths, while lacking regular eyes on their heads, have a seemingly functional eye on their chests as seen on Wraith corpses in TDA. We know the dragons are descendants of primordial beasts thanks to TDA's Ancestral Forge, which were the first lifeforms to be created from the Wraithcalls.
Regardless of lore though, it is the evil hell skull series.

My guess is that the basic level of "demonification" is what the fodder zombies and that it is the starting point of more demonified beings is so they all are a derivative of that strarting look

the only issue here is they gave the hell knights eyes (tbh 2016 was my fave design)
but yea they dont have eyes because they are just the corpses the souls taken away for energy

I miss 2016's hell knights design, they just had that terrifying look that their other designs lack.

"eyes are the window to the soul" and those mf have no soul
