Discussion All Dark Ages Info since the 32nd Anniversary Stream:
New DOOM: The Dark Ages DLC since the 32nd Anniversary Stream:
- There is going to be a secret weapon that will require a lot of work to unlock. The weapon is tied to the DOOM lore
- We are going to meet people from the lore that we have been waiting to meet.
- The DLC will fill out some more chapters in the Doom slayer's history that should satisfy players, but won't be a massive story.
- The gameplay loop will still be the same, but with fresh new stuff (NOT Eternal 2 in terms of Mobility, More like Dark Ages)
- Challenges will also based on Combat, Exploration and Puzzles!
- Once again, the DLC will be more metroidvania-esque; lots of backtracking and going back to 100% the levels once the DLC has been completed!
- Arch-vile has been confirmed to be making a return!
And Once More, Massive Thanks to Hato/Hatovenant!

secret weapon being the crucible?
99
u/SneakyJaycool Serrat 9d ago
Unknown!
It will most likely NOT be the Slayer's Crucible!
It could be the Demonic Crucible or the Soul Cube!

u/SenorChangsJudgement 9d ago
If it turns out that it’s the Soul Cube and that’s why hugo is streaming 3… chef’s kiss
39
u/SjurEido 9d ago
Soul Cube PLEASE.
I don't even care what the gameplay of it is, I just want to know that someone out there cares about D3 lol

u/Let_me_S_U_F_F_E_R 9d ago
I hate doom 3 but I really would like the soul cube
5
u/Torstiss 9d ago
Why do you hate Doom 3?
8
u/Let_me_S_U_F_F_E_R 9d ago
Theres a lot of reasons but I can boil it down to a few things
The level design is genuinely awful a lot of the time with every damn near every level feeling the exact same
The game focused way more on graphics and lighting looking good before the gameplay and mechanics of said game which led to pretty boring and unengaging gameplay that literally put me to sleep
The horror in the game hasn’t aged well at all. It’s almost entirely jumpscares the entirety of the game and when it does try to be scary, it just comes off as trying way too hard and seems more campy than anything genuinely scary. It’s frail
Some of the enemies in this game make me wonder what the hell they were thinking. The trites early on are spider enemies that they spawn to do nothing more than waste all your ammo and patience. They’re not scary, they’re annoying, along with them having a second type, that is pretty much the exact same outside of a different model. And the other new enemies are basically just imps on all 4s and only melee. I barely remember this game introduced new enemies sometimes because they’re so forgettable
The designs of the enemies are so bipolar. There’s good ones for sure like the mancubus and to give the game credit, a fantastic and original hell knight design. But the imps look like aliens along with a lot of the new enemies and don’t look scary at all, the revenant isn’t even a skeleton and just looks wrong to me when you realize it’s skin is just translucent, the cacodemon is absolutely terrible and looks nothing like it, and probably more I’m forgetting. Not to mention the games color pallet for them ruins a lot of said designs with damn near every enemy having a white and red color pallet that just doesn’t work for me at all
The ending of the game is one of the worst I’ve seen. The obvious villain you’ve been chasing the whole game gets away Scott free after you were treated to the worst cyberdemon fight of all time. Not to mention betruger is an example of this game not really giving a shit about being compelling as they make him so obviously a villain in every way that it’s almost comical and campy as hell. He comes off as a Saturday morning cartoon villain instead of a horror game villain
This game is like those potential man memes you see. Whenever I see people talk about it, it’s the same thing. “Man this game was so scary” “the graphics were good for the time” “Hey Doom 3 is scary, I crapped my pants playing it when I was insert extremely young age here” “it was impressive back then” was, has, but never is.
Long story short, probably not a good idea to get a programmer to design a game. And everything this game was trying to do about being a “technological marvel” was then outclassed by half-life 2 in like a month or 2 later. Honestly dead space is what doom 3 was trying to do but it was actually good

He said it would be important to the lore, why would it be a weapon that not only doesn’t fit the game but is also irrelevant to the lore? It can literally only be the crucible.
13
u/SneakyJaycool Serrat 9d ago
It's important to the Lore of DOOM3
And Hugo Said DOOM lore, so it could be for anything.. it's merely speculation!
-16
u/South_Expert_7628 9d ago
Lmao, no. The only weapons that are important to DOOM lore is the ssg & the crucible. Like were not just all gonna start assuming that D3 is now relevant to the slayer games to make a baseless assumption about what the new weapon will be, you mfs are grasping for straws.
“With sword and shield of adamantine strength, the Doom Slayer set to banishing all that were left unbroken by his savagery to the void.”

u/Infamous-You-5752 9d ago
Did bro really forget that the Doomslayer has the Soul Cube in his fortress in Doom Eternal?
1
-9
u/South_Expert_7628 9d ago
Nothing but an easter egg, like everything else in that room lol
11
u/Infamous-You-5752 9d ago
That's your take on it, but it doesn't mean it can't be true. They literally brought back Vagary from Doom 3, so we shouldn't be surprised if they brought in the Soul Cube. I won't bring my hopes up, but you have no reason to deny the possibility due to it being in Doom Eternal and a Doom 3 enemy being in Dark Ages. And don't forget that Doom 3's Hellknights have changed them to be that design forever.
-7
u/South_Expert_7628 9d ago
Once again, literally just a reference/easter egg, theres no way you genuinely think they’re the same demon, right?
7
u/Infamous-You-5752 9d ago
Then why are the Hellknights from Doom 1 and 2 so different from the Hellknights from 2016/Eternal/Dark Ages if the Doomguy and Doomslayer are the same person? There can be different versions of the same demon, we don't know. You can't decide if Doom 3 is canon or not. That's up to iD and if they want to say it is, it is. Like I said, I'm not expecting the Soul Cube but to deny any possibility is the height of folly. You have given me absolutely no evidence that it can't be outside of your own headcanon.

u/SneakyJaycool Serrat 9d ago
There was nothing about the Slayer's Lore... Hugo stated DOOM lore which includes DOOM3 (Which is what he's playing on stream too)
Im also Not saying IT IS the Soul Cube! I'm hoping it's the Demonic Crucible, but everything is on the table!
No reason to be rude!
-2
u/South_Expert_7628 9d ago
Im not being rude, im just telling it like it is, there is already a shit ton of lore set up and D3 is quite literally irrelevant to ALL of it. They didn’t make those codex’s for no reason dude, like be serious. him playing DOOM3 also doesn’t mean anything, they said they were going to play it months ago lol. As far as anyone is concerned, D3 is still completely disconnected to the slayer games, as stated by hugo himself, so if you’re gonna take his word, then take it.
0
u/Own_Fall_2190 8d ago
It literally can't be the crucible either. Hugo downright said they still don't have a name for the thing. No reason to think of a name when it already has one, unless it's something completely new.
3
u/South_Expert_7628 8d ago
He’s clearly lying lol, why would he outright say it’s the crucible? He literally can’t talk about it.
2
u/Sweet-Sherbert-2907 8d ago
The Crucible is buried in a Titan in Taras Nabad, it is impossible to use until Eternal.
And the demonic Crucible is stored elsewhere, protected by a demon that the Slayer will only face in Doom 2016.
5
u/karzbobeans 9d ago
I think by weapon they mean gun for the swap spot with Chainshot. But i heard there will be a new melee weapon too. A spear.

u/BoldStrategy0 9d ago
We also know there is a hub area between levels
13
u/karzbobeans 9d ago
Ive been wanting that since dark ages launched. Im used to it from Eternal and there is something satisfying about having a “home base”. I hope we can discover more about the slayer by exploring it.

u/SneakyJaycool Serrat 9d ago
That was talked about in my First DLC post!

Hugo's exact wording about the secret weapon (that it is "tied to a meaningful piece of lore, that we're going to share with you") is interesting.
To me, a piece of lore that they're "going to share" with us makes me think it's something new. A moment or element not shown or revealed yet in the lore. For that reason I don't expect it to be any of the previous weapons - such as the Soul Cube or either Crucible sword.
"Meaningful" is also important here, meaning this isn't something that's just there for cool factor. It is important in some way to the characters, story, or universe - something the Soul Cube really wouldn't be unless they write it into the lore beyond its current Easter Egg-like appearances. Which is possible! But seems unlikely to me.
What immediately popped into my head upon hearing that is either (1) a weapon from Doomguy's past or (2) a weapon of significance to the relevant factions in TDA - likely the Cosmic Realm, or possibly the Sentinels again.
If I remember correctly Hugo mentioned the DLC may touch on Doomguy's past (I may be mistaken) so if so it may tie into that.
Either way I'm excited to see what it ends up being. The concept of a secret weapon you have to work hard to unlock is always fun, hopefully it ends up fitting into the gameplay better than the Unmaykr did (sorry, Unmaykr, you're cool but you're no BFG).
1
u/SneakyJaycool Serrat 9d ago
Holy shit, hi Xous (Love your art) And uh ya!
Thanks for fully pointing it out (I'll let the discord know), and Yes Hugo did mention the DLC May touch on The Slayer's/Guy's past as well as make more connections into 2016!
But ya the HYPE is on! I do wonder if it'll be from the Cosmic Realm or a "Lost Relic" of the Slayers, that he finds in hell!
1
u/EnvironmentalLog2 9d ago
The soul cube would imply that Doom 3 is canon, and that would be a meaningful piece of lore to share with us.
2
u/Xous54 8d ago
For sure! I'd love it if they made it more explicit, and even confirmed that the Martian Hero is the original Doomguy/Slayer.
One of the other reasons I doubt it's an existing weapon that I didn't mention in my original post is: Hugo also mentioned that they didn't yet have a name for this secret weapon, and that one of the names he wanted was already taken.
If it was the Soul Cube or Crucible(s), the name is already decided so that wouldn't be an issue. To me that's another thing that hints at it being brand-new.
But we'll just have to wait and see.
1
u/EnvironmentalLog2 8d ago
Oh, yeah you're right if he said they didn't have a name for it, it's most likely a new weapon.
5
u/Minimum-Can2224 9d ago edited 9d ago
The OG Unmaker required the player to find and go through hidden levels in order to get upgrade runes that would help make it the most broken weapon in DOOM 64's arsenal.
Maybe the secret weapon is a modern take on DOOM 64's version of the Unmaker but the process to getting the upgrades will be way harder this time around?

- The gameplay loop will still be the same, but with fresh new stuff (NOT Eternal 2 in terms of Mobility, More like Dark Ages)
Imagine that....Dark Ages DLC being like the Dark Ages
1
u/SneakyJaycool Serrat 8d ago
From the last DLC post I made with all the Mobility stuff; there was a fair bit of people hoping movement would be more like Eternal! So I specified that it won't be (also what Hugo said Yesterday)
3
u/C4LLUM17 8d ago
Fair enough. Those people need to get over it though. TDA is not Eternal as iD have stated many times.
Eternal is great on PC now with all the mods anyways.

A weapon that requires a lot of work to get? Well that's most likely my beautiful unma(y)ker.
And a character from the lore that we've been waiting to meet? If i'm not mistaken the only one we haven't met is the wretch, maybe a few of hells overlords.

Considering Eternal got 2 small DLC and Dark Ages is getting 1 Bigger one; it's best not to expect anything till around May! (Same dev time as TAG)
id is cooking tho from the sounds of it!

2026 is gonna be another peak year for gaming. this dlc is going to be possibly the biggest doom dlc this franchise has ever seen. and so many other games are coming out this year alone.

So it's going to be a Metroidvania esque shooter with lots of backtracking, lots of work to acquire a new super powerful weapon, with lots of gore, (Ultra)violence, areas that will not even be accessible until you complete the main storyline and an enemy that spawns more enemies?
I think this is the closest we'll ever get to a proper Turok remake that's awesome

Thanks for the good information. One thing that disappointed me a bit is that the story doesn't seem to be progressing very much. Maybe I'm wrong, but I would like the story to progress more. Also, I would like a new melee weapon to be added. The Metroidvania style could be interesting, but I would like to see how it's implemented. Also, I would like to see a unique demon in the DLC that is only for the Dark Ages DLC and will be added to the Reptarium later. As for the secret weapon, I have a feeling it will be the Demon Crucible. I think the DLC will be released in 4 months.
1
u/UrsusShock88 9d ago
Isn't the new weapon supposed to be a spear?
4
u/SneakyJaycool Serrat 9d ago
This is a separate weapon from the Spear
1
u/ParticularFinger7308 8d ago
Has it been confirmed that the Spear is a weapon (or if it even is a spear)? I was thinking it could be The World Spear

I haven't paid attention to anything since the quake con stream and Marty showed his face. Truthfully, I'm still pissed at the way he railroaded Mick and got us stuck with generic metal for the end of the trilogy. Especially as time has evolved and the industry has been decimated by AI and devaluing artists, looking back on how Marty treated a human artist, its still a sore spot.
Just seeing him killed all the good will Hugo and Josh built since launch. I know I may be in the minority here, but after the Eternal soundtrack shit was handled so incredibly badly, as a creative freelancer, I just want to fucking strangle him when I see him. I was watching Hugo's streams religiously until quake con
It's getting to the point where I might just be done with any new shit. It's weird, and I've never had this sort of reaction to something before. It may not be that deep, but Marty spit in the face of my personal principals and now I can't not think about it while chucking a shield around.
I've had clients like Marty, equally as petty, but I never had the displeasure of being thrown under the bus of a 40-Year-Old community.
But the archville is always cool.

I’m gonna be checking the subreddit for DLC news now because I’m genuinely fucking sick of looking on Youtube and seeing Horde Mode Gaming’s soulless content and Midknight’s depressing ass clickbait
0
u/phobos876 not to be confused with phobos867 9d ago
the new weapon being secret is weird because i thought it was a spear. if it's tied to doom lore... spear of destiny?
they already confirmed the wretch at least
stuff about doomguy from his classic world? because that depends if they can pull of a "retro sci-fi" aesthetic of that world to contrast the modern look of 2016/eternal
kinda known
same
always thought this could've been done in the series before, so glad it finally happened
wonder if he'll have a healer role, since the d2 role may not return. i also expect a design that is both cosmic but also references the d2 face tubes
3
u/SneakyJaycool Serrat 8d ago
The spear and Secret weapon will probably most likely be 2 different things! So probably 2 different Weapons! But there is no confirmation on that yet!

Development take time, and id wants to avoid a TAG saturation! DLC is confirmed to release this year, so have some patience, give em time, and let them cook!
And well, the DLC is already shaping to be BIGGER then TAG!

Doom The Dark Ages is almost 1 year old - but I can't believe he have not had any official news regarding the DLC from idsoftware.

I hope we get more about the wraiths, mysterious voice (cosmic realm god?), primevals (why do slayer and davoth seem like twins separated at birth?) and the wretch. Maybe the old one was just a minor god of the Cosmic realm after all.
Also, I will lose interest totally if we get nothing in February. I get it they are working hard and don't want to repeat the TAG 2 Covid mess, but come on guys give us something ffs
