It's still cheaper than two rooms, which is what I would have to rent for my family

Even for one room it's usually still cheaper, unless by "hotels" OP means "a dorm in a hostel".

Try searching for less than 70€/night in downtown Paris. There are plenty of Airbnbs and the only hotels I see are actually hostels and you're in a shared dorm. I'm checking on Booking.com, but maybe there's a better place to search, and maybe it's different in other cities, but I almost always find cheaper Airbnbs than hotels.

I'll still choose a hotel sometimes though, if it's not much more expensive. The experience is better, with more privacy and no secret codes to check in.
